I got 75% back but I got it wholesale and sold it ten years later.

Op don't get her a cz unless that's what she wants. How can even equate cz with lab grown?

I wouldn't want someone else picking out my ring either. I would give a budget and let them figure it out. Another option is moissanite, cheaper than lab grown diamonds but plenty pretty and a real stone. But either way, the choice should be hers within your budget.

Sold my real diamond ring for $1400, it was appraised for $3700, 20 years prior. Don’t know how much it actually was originally bought for.

My diamond fell out of my setting on my engagement ring. A new comparable lab grown diamond was 3k.
I figured that even if I buy a new cz every 3 years or so (when it dulls), I still come out ahead. And I get to keep updating my setting 🤷‍♀️. And I’m not paranoid about them.
I’ve gotten so many compliments on my eternity band 😜.
The best is my cz pendant necklace. Looks like it’s a 5k necklace. I’ve already had quite a few people ask me if they can show it to their husbands, to explain this is the style they want. That’s usually when I tell them where they can go to get one for themselves as well, for $120! They are usually shocked. And later tell me they got their next piece there as well because of me 😉.

So where can I go to get one??

We gave our daughter-in-law a choice. A bit smaller and a real diamond. Or a bit bigger and a lab grown diamond - which are not so cheap either. She chose smaller and real.

I don't know what to tell you.

I'm looking at my finger right now. Gorgeous half eternity. 2.5 carat. $750.

Oh and my tennis bracelet. 6 carat. $1600

Oh and my diamond hoops. 2.5 carat. $550

My diamond solitaire necklace with a thicker gold chain. $500

Are they the best quality? Probably not. But they are so sparkly and are full of fire.

There's a big difference between a 2 carat stone and an eternity band with 10 quarter-carat stones. Ditto the rest of your pieces. One whole carat is much more expensive than four quarter-carats. And one two-carat stone is much more expensive than two one-carat stones. So both prices make sense.

I'm not saying the price doesn't make sense. I'm saying cheaper can be found. I linked a $300 1 carat necklace earlier. I know where to buy loose stones for about $300 a carat, $500 for 2 carat.

Cheapest isn't always best. I'm sure I'm not getting ideal cut or whatever but personally I don't care. I care how it sparkles and looks nice when wearing.

I'm not one who sets store by the monetary value of a gift and appreciate the fact that someone gave me a gift regardless, BUT if anyone gave me a fake and passed it off as real, that would raise serious doubts as to their honesty in general and I would have a hard time trusting them about anything. Ever again.

I don’t see any issue with lab grown at all, I don’t even think the couple has to know if parents are footing the bill; parents gave what they could afford and zehu. I wouldn’t have cared. If they want to upgrade later in life, who is stopping them? As far as resale, who thinks about selling their diamond from their engagement ring? If that’s part of the cheshbon, what on earth is the point in the first place? It’s supposed to symbolize the longevity of the union, no?
As for CZs, however, I don’t think that’s right unless the kallah specifically prefers it due to her own value set. Or unless parents are completely transparent and say that this is all they can truly afford. But to do it deceptively is not yashrus.

FTR, lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. They're just created under different conditions than mined diamonds.

. But cz is not, and OP was also considering cz. In any event, mined are still considered more valuable than lab grown, so passing off the latter as the former is dishonest, despite the fact that they are chemically identical.

I would have preferred no ring at all or a band with a sprinkling of tiny mined stones or a beautiful pearl instead of a cv or lab grown. Many years ago, when we were engaged, my mil gave us her ring and we had it re-set. One day it will belong to our dd, who has a lovely but small stone bought by her dh with money he earned himself. We helped our ds to buy a ring for his kallah, and he contributed from savings. It's kind of crazy to give such an expensive gift, but when I see how happy it made her, I'm glad we did. My nieces have large lab grown rings, and they really like them, so I guess it's an individual like or dislike.
