Warming food in an oven for shabbos?

My grandparents rabbi held it was fine. There are different opinions. We personally don’t do it

With the assumption that it's a food that is allowed to be warmed up, but in some other way. Challah is the example I gave. It's fully baked and totally dry. And the assumption that the oven is already on, so it's not a turning on of electricity I'm asking about. It's about whether or not putting food into an oven ON shabbos is ever okay according to any orthodox group's understanding of Halacha.


you can definitely not put food into an oven on Shabbos, as far as I know.
Besides the issues of cooking, there's also a big issue of Hatmana, which I think another poster mentioned....
Hatmana is also an issue where if you have food in the oven, put in before Shabbos, and you remove only part of it, and the oven is on, you can't close the oven door again...
I have my oven shut off before I remove the food....
(I heat up everything in my oven for Friday night- I load it before Shabbos- I put in Challa, soup, meat, side dishes.....the entire meal is in the oven....)

My aunt and uncle hold that you can put food in if you do it when the oven is already heating up (so you don't start it heating up by opening the door), and don't fully close the door- there has to be something propping it open a bit.. For perspective, this is with their ancient oven, came with the house in 1982. They were told this then and have been doing it ever since, though they don't assume it is true with newer ovens. Our rav said that while we cannot do this, under any circumstances with any oven, we can eat there.
