I think its interchangeable. I know that many times schools are called yeshiva day schools.

Hebrew day school, what does that mean? Is that different than a yeshivah?

Different places used different terms. But they are interchangeable. More to the right tend to use the term yeshiva but middle of the road and left can use either. Just find out the crowd, hashkafa, academics of each one.

I think every school needs to be looked at individually.
My kids' school is still called a Hebrew Day School because the name hasn't been changed since 1947, but it's on par with any yeshiva/Torah day school/academy...

I think it depends on the individual school.
Often times a hebrew day school is more to the left than a yeshiva.
Some are for kids that come from families that minimally practice religion, if at all.

It can often mean more left, but you need to look at the school because I can think of several "Hebrew Day Schools" that are not. Often this reflects the age of the school, as well, with "Hebrew day school" being more popular with older schools in my experience. (See also "Hebrew Academy" which pops up all over.)

In Chicago, for example, both Hillel Torah and Arie Crown call themselves day schools, but Hillel is modern Orthodox and I would call Arie Crown JPF.
