Posting in the finance section because we're syper tight financially. I only have one wig & it's oxidized a lot. Would it be crazy to dye it myself? Can someone walk me through the process? I can't afford to drop it off and leave it for a few days...

Find a sheitel lady that will do it overnight.
I do sheitels and I've seen sheitels killed by ppl that tried to do it themselves.
Only do it if you can afford another one it this one get messed up.

I have done it many times it actually makes the wig supper soft again. I really don’t think it’s all that hard or diff then when a Shetail Macher does it. I have seen boxes of dye by Shetial Macher. I did do it on an older wig which I didn’t mind ruining. But was very pleasantly surprised. I did it to all my other wigs after. Just follow directions on box and leave a window open cause of the strong fumes

If that was my only wig I definitely wouldn't do it myself. If you ruin it you will regret not spending the money on getting it done.

I have also saved hundreds of dollars dying my oxidized wigs. Caveat - finding the right color can take a few tries, so if it's a wig you care a lot about, probably wouldn't recommend trying on it for the first time. If you have an older wig to try, it's really worthwhile. Tip - start at the roots, avoiding the part, and work your way to the tips. Also, leave the color in for the shortest suggested time, since it can get very dark if left for the full time. I love Revlon Colorsilk 30 Dark Brown, shaitel is about a 4 color.

As long as you can get someone experienced to advise in the right color and are careful to evenly distribute the dye everywhere, you can absolutely do it!

A shaitel macher recommended the Schwarzkopf Keratin line. I like the 4.0 cappuccino color, again for a #4 shaitel. The dyes can cost under $10. Also, I find that if you're not dying it a drastically different color (which you shouldn't attempt on your own), you need to pay most attention to the topmost layer, since that is the part that oxidizes most.

You can try washing it with a "purple shampoo" kind of toner. Not a dye, but helps.
