They charge for emails?!!! What about snail mail? Phone calls? You're trusting these people with your kid away from home and they charge you extra to contact them?!

I think they charge for emails more as a practical thing, not a money maker. Someone in the office is sitting there printing out camper emails, folding them and writing their name on it. If it was free it might be a never ending job! No charge for snail mail or phone calls. The younger ages aren't allowed phone calls anyhow but I do remember a phone call in the heller office that girls would use. Maybe just erev shabbos? I don't remember.

I spent 10+ years in sternberg as a camper then staff member. I second the reccomendation to choose 2nd half if you'd like a more right-leaning crowd. I also understand that it's a bit cheaper than first nowadays, because it's shorter. And I think if you call up the office they can tell you what flexibility they have around payment plans, it's quite possibly more than what they would want to write as their official policy.

The website names a trip fee. Like wth? Since when are trips not included in a sleep away camp? It's not like you even theoretically have an option to just stay home that day. It's not a small fee either.

And they expect payment in full by May 1, almost 3 months before she would set foot in camp. How do people deal with this?!

It's annoying, but I appreciate their transparency. Lots of camps have tons of extra fees that aren't clearly outlined until much later.

They're not the only camp I've sent to that charge for emails. It's becoming more common. It's through a system called campintouch. It's also where you manage canteen. Phone calls are free of course and plentiful. You can send regular mail all you want, and so can the campers. They also post pictures every single day so you can see your camper having a great time daily.
