Grrr.. Again, what are better teachers??
How do you ensure that the most dedicated moral won't be thrown a monkey wrench in life, which will distract her from her job?

Teachers who are aware of their students emotional states. Who can judge the consequences of their actions , who don't take themselves too seriously ,who take the "rules" with a grain of salt,in accordance with the childs needs, know what the work load should be for that grade, who respect their students as actual people, and obviously know how to relate the information in a good way Etc..
A lot of little nuances which make teaching probably THE hardest and most important jobs out there. Especially when they're dealing with (too) many students at once.

I can't possibly take the salary that an 18 year old graduate would settle for.
I give my job my all while I'm doing it. I do get breaks and there is flexibility. And if the occasional mistake occurs, a little life is not at stake.

I don't get you.
So we shouldn't have teachers at all?
My experience as a mom of 9 and as a teacher is that the older teachers don't have the energy that younger teachers have. Very often a teacher in their 30s can give more than one in their 50s on that front. (The ones who are older have other maalos.)

You're saying that you need breaks, and you need flexibility and lives are not in your hands.
If I paid you triple your current salary, would you teach? without breaks, without flexibility and with lives in your hands?

Not everything in life is about money.
I live in Israel and my kids classes are big. Their teachers are dedicated (at least most) to the nth degree, they put a lot of time and effort in and we see it.
yes, they go on maternity leave, and chasuna leave, and sick leave and the kids have to manage with a substitute.
That's life. No?

What you're not taking into account is the bigger picture. A school is bottom line an institution and they can't always make it best for every individual. We do our best, put in everything we can but sometimes it's not possible.

Even in classes of 15 it's not always possible.

Let's say that you have a kid who hates their uniform. Should we let them wear whatever they want?

I'm all for raising teachers salaries but I don't think that will solve the problem that you are raising which is basically that you need your child to have one on one attention.

A good teacher teaches well even with distractions.
Daven that your children get the good ones.
The teachers who are inexperienced but have potential can be worked with.

Ds was complaining a lot about his rebbe. He ended up passing away right when the year was over and in his obituary it said he was weak and suffering for the past two years…
We had an elementary principal that we officially knew was a witch when she was pregnant. She happens to be a good person and when I spoke to her years later she apologized for certain things she did.

If a teacher cannot do her job well, she shouldn't teach. Zehu.
Why is it so complicated?

A teacher is like a shidduch. Liked by some, disliked by others.

Because in many cases an adequate teacher is better than no teacher.

And because no teacher is amazing for every student.
And the teacher that you're complaining about very likely I'll be very upset if she's fired because she is great for my kid.

This is true. Supposing that in general she is good all around.
If she is unable to do her job properly, which means emotional investment as well , she simply is not fit.

Yes- in a sense, a teacher needs to give every student individual attention some of the time. That is a basic of good teaching. If this is not being done, it's not good teaching.
Just because it's become the norm to have teachers who cant/won't/are clueless in this regard, does not make it right.
I'm sorry if this riles people up, but I think someone needs to speak up for teachers rights, which in turn passes down to the students ..

Emotional investment is a tricky term. Who judges what that is exactly?

What I mean is that she should think of the specific child and act accordingly. Not that she has to get fully involved in their life.

Op I really don’t understand what your point is. You started by talking about teachers who are at a certain point in their lives shouldnt be teachers

Quote:
Reading the post about first trimester teacher who doesn't feel well , and thinking about the post partum teachers, 18-19 year old teachers who are kallahs, etc.

And then you switched to talking about bad teachers. The first topic I think we all disagree with you thats life move on. The second topic I dont think anyone disagrees bad teachers shouldnt be teaching.

Who is the judge of "act accordingly?" Maybe the teacher you think could do better thinks she is doing well.

You're right. I did lump them together, which they shouldn't necessarily be.
Like someone said, there are teachers who can be good no matter the circumstances.
When I say bad teachers, I mean either through inexperience, lack of skill or empathy, and sometimes circumstance.

Why is this about teachers rights? First you say at certain stages in life, people shouldn't teach.
Then you say if they were paid more, it wouldn't happen.
Which makes no sense. However much you pay me, I still throw up in first trimester.

Giving individual attention is not a basis of teaching in a classroom. If you want individual attention, you pay an individual teacher.
THinking about every child is a basic and I can guarantee you every teacher thinks about each child. They may not understand them, they may not be able to act because of the group setting but to think? they all do.

That's why there are higher ups, and also us parents, who can make them aware.
