I HATE ZELLE. Let give you the other side of the zelle story!
2 people needed to zelle me money. Both said they did. I received neither.
They even had proof that it went through.

After hours on the phone to the regular bank getting no help. Bank says my zelle is working. Bank says people did not send me zelle.
Finally spoke to someone in fraud department at the bank. My zelle had been closed down (no, the regular bank did not know this!) because I had logged into my account and zelle from a new device. It then took hours to get that device recognized. The people who had zelled me had had their payment returned to them and they hadn't realized that. I explained that to the people and they then zelled again. Next problem was that my zelle actually still was not working, so back to them saying they zelled and me not getting it.
Now it is working but I can't log into my zelle as my email and phone number belong to another account not this new one. I HATE ZELLE

Woah that sounds bad. Sorry for your experience.
I have been using Zelle since 2020 and never had a problem with it. And I use it a lot.
I did have a case with one person that I sent a zelle to. His Zelle account was not good so the money kept being returned to me.
But I checked my account here and this money went through. It was never returned.

I find it to be a lot safer than checks or cash because there is always a record at the end of the day.

Did you check that you sent it to the contractors correct zelle address?

I’m confused. Everyone is saying scam.. but he isn’t asking her to pay again??
Why don’t you tell her to call you with the other bank on the phone and you conference in your bank??

Yes. It had his wife's name on it.

You’re being very nice but this kind of sounds like his problem.

If someone zelled you and then your account got locked out you wouldn’t be calling the person that payed you “hey where’s my money I’m locked out of my account”. You’d handle it yourself by calling Zelle and getting it figured out.

He could be doing sketchy stuff on Zelle and your payment was the last one to be received.

I say it’s his problem and he needs to figure it out

Yes he is. You never ever conference in your bank or give anyone this much access. This is how you lose all your money.

Actually why don't you just report it to the police? Then tell the guy he can also open a case. Then block their numbers. I wouldn't meet them anywhere even at the police station.

Why am I giving him the benefit of the doubt? His wife's name on it? Spelled correctly? I don't know why I think it just went to the wrong account. Isn't that a possibility?

This is why I never Zelle or give a check from someone out of community. I just say I don’t have Zelle if they ask.

This happened to someone I know. The bank shut down the account alleging fraud and then they went to the bank and the bank had messed up. They saw a transaction that was odd and did not notify the person, they arbitrarily shut down the account. So she threatened to sue, went in person to the bank and they restored the account a few days later. Nightmare.

I don't understand what you're saying. Do you use zelle?
I assume you don't know how it works.

The way it works is that the person who wants to get paid gives your their phone number or email address. You type it in.
Then zelle PROVIDES you with the name of the account.
They say something like, "the account you are attempting to Zelle to belongs to THERESA RODRIGUEZ. Are you sure this is the intended recipient?"
This way, if you put in the wrong phone number by mistake, you can catch your mistake.
Furthermore, before pressing send, they ask you again if you are sure because once you send it- no backsies.

So, no, there's no possibility that it went into the wrong account because I misspelled his wife's name.

So, he is claiming that his bank (Wells Fargo) told him that the account was locked because I made a Fraud claim on him. And that the only way he can resolve it is by calling me to retract the claim.

Now that I'm repeating the story he told, I can see it obviously makes no sense. Why would I have the control to shut down someone else's account merely by paying him something and then retracting it?
But this is his claim.

Interesting.
But did the fraud claim come from someone who zelled them?

Ok. That might be true. But that doesn’t mean it’s a scam.
Op can try to help if she wants. (Smartly… obviously) It’s definitely not her fault and doesn’t have to. But I still don’t see the scam if he isn’t asking for more money.
Everyone would be disappointed in getting locked out of their bank account and would try to get to the bottom of it…
