My daughter's teacher is concerned, she has a really hard time focusing. Like, can't focus. Always watching what other kids are doing or spaced out, instead of looking at her work. She's smart enough to understand and do well, but only when she's actually paying attention which isn't often enough. This isn't really an issue at home, because she doesn't have to focus for long. She used to take foreveeeeer to walk a single block, because every rock on the sidewalk or cloud in the sky was a reason to stop and look. But she's improved from that point.
We don't live in a place like NY with tons of services available in school.
Any ideas?

I would ask her Dr to run a FULL thyroid panel. Hidden thyroid disorders can look like inattentive ADHD.

You can try giving her l tyrosine, it helps boost dopamine production, similar to a stimulant.

The book Finally Focused may have some other good ideas for you.

Diet changes help a lot of kids with distractibility too.

This is my with 2nd grade DD. I got lucky last year I had 2 older teachers who weren’t into labels and evaluations.
It caught up with me this year. Did a BOE eval specifically looking to get a diagnosis of inattentive ADHD so that I could get services covered. Her scores weren’t low enough- makes sense cuz all the testing is one on one and she’s much worse in a classroom setting where there are distractions. Her processing scores were her worst ones. I went for a private auditory processing eval and she got a label and now can get services. I still think there’s some ADHD in there but I have a fam member who’s a PSY-D who told me that he wouldn’t medicate her (yet) she’s not a harm to herself and she’s not bothering anyone else around her so he doesn’t see the need. The one on one in school is a tremendous help…
Any other Qs I can try to help u

Thank you, everyone who responded.
We'll have to start by speaking to her pediatrician. I don't remember if we discussed this before. She's had this difficulty since she was an infant, but obviously it becomes more of an issue in the classroom.
I don't live in a place with services in school, and I don't see how getting her private help/out of school would help much. She's in a very small class (though obviously not one-on-one) and it's still a real problem. Obviously no one can force her to pay attention.

I'm so sad for her she's struggling with this Sad it affects her confidence
