I hired someone to pressure wash my property before Sukkos. He came on October 15, and I paid him via Zelle.
Today, he called me to say that his account was closed down. He went down to the bank to investigate, and was told that it was due to my payment on that day. His bank told him that I had made a claim that it was fraud, and so they shut down his account. He had my first and last name.
I told him that I do not recall anything of the sort, but I'm truly sorry, and we will get to the bottom of it.
First, I checked my bank account online and found that the payment was debited from my account.
Then I called the bank and they checked my account. They found no claims at all made on my end. They could see that the transaction was processed normally.
So I called back the guy and told him. He said he will call his bank again. He called me a bit later to say that he got a case number and that his bank confirmed again that they could do nothing until this is cleared up.
I called the Fraud department again. They confirmed again that there was no claim submitted on my end and that there was nothing more they could do on their end. On their end, everything looks completely normal, and the transaction went through successfully.
I feel really bad about it, but what else can I do? Does anyone have any idea what could be going on?

Sounds like a scam to me. Get something in writing from the bank or show a screenshot. He's trying to get paid twice.

It’s definitely a scam do nothing. It went out of your account and your bank confirmed you didn’t do it this is not your issue.

Seems like the guy was trying to scam you in to paying him again. Unfortunately, many people fall for that.

Definitely sounds like a scam.
That’s not how Zelle works…

I don't know. He sounded really sincere. He said his wife was trying to deposit a check and the account was locked out.
I offered to meet his wife at my bank to resolve the issue.
Is there anything unsafe about that?
Can't this be a bank error?

This. Send documentation. The story makes no sense either. You can ask him to send you the case number and what bank he is using. Then call the main bank number (don't call any numbers that he provides) and follow up separately.

Yes, very unsafe. And if it's their bank error, they should be able to follow up on their own.
Call shomrim and let them follow up for you

Provide proof from your bank that payment went through to other bank and is not in your bank's possession (with none of your identifying information) and then disengage
Save the documentation in case it comes up again.

They always sound sincere. Tell them you can meet at the police station it’s the only safe thing to do in such a case. It’s not a bank error.

You think it's unsafe for me to go to an open bank, where anyone can walk in?
Thing is, if he was trying his luck to scam me, why would he have called me again after I already told him that the bank said the payment was good? He knows I'm not just going to pay him again, so what does he stand to gain?

Tell them your bank said you received the payment and then block the number. Is it a frum person?

Many give in at this point either because they feel bad or they believe it etc.. all the reasons you are about to fall for it. And yes don’t let him anywhere near your accounts.

He has you in a good place - believing him and you feel sympathetic. Very easy to work you over there.
Besides he may not come alone and follow you thereafter. Please stay away.

I live in an area where certain people live off scams. They park in front of you and when you come back they show you their banged up car and claim you hit it while parking.. they do jobs and claim they didn’t receive payment etc.. this is common by some that can’t do much work unfortunately.
