6 ppl traveling, from east coast US, all old enough to need seats, so 6 plane tickets. We don't have family to stay with so would need paid accommodation. Would go during not such a peak time to save on costs. We also don't require fancy experiences or tours etc. We want to go because it's Eretz Yisrael, our kids have never been and we want to show it to them. Is this at all possible or a pipe dream?

I don't think it's possible to do for 15K. Food & travel/touring costs add up.

Plane tickets alone would cost you that amount or more

To keep costs down you would need to stay somewhere really cheap, not eat out, take public transportation, and do low cost activities. If you get really cheap tickets I think it's doable.

Not necessarily. I am flying direct in a few weeks and got tickets for $1400 (x6 is $8400). If you are are willing to have a stop over, it will probably be less.
A rental and food will cost. Not sure how much. Also depends how long you plan to stay.

Look on Google flights. Some dates are $1.5k a ticket. That’s $7.5k. An Airbnb for $300/night for 7 nights, say, is $2k. Rental car for IDK, $1k? $4.5k to eat and entertain a family for a week sounds perfectly manageable…?

We did this 6 years ago with four people. Tickets were under $1000 back then (we didn’t have to fly el al). We were also able to get a beautiful but tiny apt - one bedroom with beds in the living room. We spent around 10k and didn’t feel like we had to be cheap at all. But I wonder if it’s possible now with prices having gone up so much.

My sister went in the summer with her Family. Five people total. They stayed for 2 1/2 weeks in yerushalayim. They did eat out by Family for most suppers and the occasional lunch as well as shabbosim. they stayed in an apartment in romema. They mostly did free activities and took public transportation. Total costs were $8.5k

How far off? I have been working on this goal for 1.5 years and now flying my family for 6 free through credit card points worth $8,300.

If you get fair priced plane tickets and really cheap place to stay.
You will not have much money though for food and travel....
You don't really need to do paid attractions can focus on mekomos hakdoshem. Free beaches etc... and use public transportation but it still adds up pretty quickly

I'm talking 9-12 months from now. I don't need a fancy apt and I don't plan to do any expensive experiences, mainly just mekomos kedoshim, hikes, etc.

Best time to do this is Pesach, very possible at that time to find apartment and car swaps because families are going home. It does mean you need to make pesach in a foreign country, but I personally think its one of the most underrated times to come. Also, its a less packed crazy time.
Book tickets in advance, elal for pesach ( leaving the 1st returning the 22) is 1600 per ticket (9,600) and I found stopover flights thru ITA for 777 per ticket (4,500)
You will pay a lot for a car, probably $2000 for the whole thing, , and probably similar for an apartment, so it would be tight.
If you do elal, rent a car and apartment, you are at 13,600 before food, and we know you cant make pesach for 6 for $1500, so impossible.
If you do the elal flights, with a car and apartment swap, it fits in budget.
If you you do stopovers, and a apartment and car swap, you can probably do it for under 10k

Last summer you mean? When did they book their tickets?

Once you are in EY you don’t need so many thousands. How long do you want to stay? Rent a rental where you can cook, it will save a lot of money. For a family your size you can find a rental for 300 a night or less if you book early enough

Shouldn’t be so expensive. Look for cheaper tickets. I don‘t think a car is necessary

Well first of all, how much of the $15k are you spending on tickets?
Answer that, and we might be able to help you.

But where will you stay? And for instance, you say "mekomos kedoshim," but if you are planning to spend a few days in the north, you'll need accommodations for that separate from your center/Jerusalem accommodations.

Not necessarily. They can do a day trip. Meron, tzfat and tveria trips leave every Monday and Thursday from bneibrak and yerushalayim.
Or budget for two nights in tzfat in airbnb and the rest in an apartment in yerushalayim. Instead of 300 a night find one that you can rent for 2 weeks with an agreed upon price.
Don’t rent a car- there is barely any parking. Use public transportation- buy rav kav.
I am paying 1300 for a straight flight the end of January.
So about 8000 for tickets
About 2000 for an apt ( if you take one that is not in the center and not tourist season)for 2 weeks
About 1000 for travel on ravkav and other public transportation. That leaves 4000 to work with for food and other expenses.
Also remember to purchase travel insurance.
