We bought a hair cutting machine, I cut dh's hair and even my own short hair with it.

I did for a few years. In the last 6 months or so my boys started going to the barber again. Was just too stressful to do the hair clean up (I tried over a plastic table cloth, with a special hair collecter thing etc) and also sensory wise one of my kids would freak out at me and there would inevitably be frustration and I felt it was impacting our relationship. Not worth the saving money for that kid. He allows the barber to do the job, I can see him clenching his eyes and hands it is hard for him but because he is in public he wont meltdown. So once I'm shlepping him, and DH anyways always goes to barber, the other few end up coming along. I'm hoping to try again in about 4 months or so when he is older perhaps he will tolerate it at home.

With 5 males in the house, I should do it. I know it’s not complicated and cheaper, but it’s the one thing that has never been my responsibility and I’m not changing that. I do enough as it is. When my boys were younger, going to the barber with my husband was an adventure. Lately my nephew has been doing it for them though.

I started cutting my son's hair when he was 2 after watching a barber do it. His hair is thick and grows fast so it's every 6 weeks. Occasionally we do it professionally for simchas. It takes 5 minutes. I also cut my girls' hair. And my own. But my husband goes to someone because he worries I won't do his correctly.

If cleanup is hard, maybe do it over a disposable tablecloth and then just ball it up and throw it out afterward.
