I am the opposite of trendy. As in, I don't understand why everyone is arguing about lace tops or lace fronts or whatever, but I assume that it's one of those things I'll just never understand, like buying a new wardrobe every season or buying shirts from frum stores that need a shell under them anyway.
I haven't replaced my sheitel in over a decade. I don't wear it all day every day, and it was very good quality when I got it. But now it's falling apart and the sheitelmachers are telling me they can't repair it.
I tried once, a few years ago, to buy a new sheitel. Spend good money on it and it looked AWFUL afterwards. I think the problem was that the sheitelmacher was very good at taking instruction from people--which was why she got such rave reviews from the people I spoke with. But I don't know what I'm doing. I can't give instruction. So when I said "It doesn't look right" and tried to articulate why, she did the best she could but at the end of the day it looked really really horrendous.
So now I'm going to try again. Not looking for lace-anything. Not looking for long or trendy. Just looking for someone who can make me a sheitel that looks like I could have worn it in the 90s as a BY teacher. That's my comfort zone.
Not sure how to ask that in person, or even non-anonymously on Baltimommies. I thought about finding some random people walking through Seven Mile with the type of sheitels that I'm thinking of and asking them where they got it, but don't want to be socially off 
Any ideas? Who do people who want tame, classic sheitels go to? The sheitelmachers I've been to all seem to trend towards trendy. Is there anyone who is good at old-school?
I have a decent budget for it but don't want to spend it and feel like I threw in the garbage like last time.

Maybe try zehava schlein. And you should totally ask people in 7mm. I'm sure any woman would be flattered to be asked.

Try Fagie Rosen. Can’t say for sure but I feel like she’d be able to help you with this. She’s been doing this for a while so she should have experience with what you’re asking for. She’s also super super sweet which is a major plus. Just call her and explain what you wrote out here.
Also I totally don’t think it’s socially off to ask random people who they get their sheitels from. I think most people would be flattered and happy to give recommendations.

I don't know anyone in Baltimore but you could show the sheitelmacher a picture of the style you are after if you find it hard to articulate.

I also go a long time before purchasing and have had a few sheitek flops.
I dont livr un Baltimore, so no recommendations, but I strongly suggestvyou pick a sheitel macher and then bring your sheitel in a few times to be washed and set on your head. This will teach the sheitel macher your style. Even if you don't need it and its expensive- the $150 or so is worth it.

Stacey Spigelman is good at listening to what you say and what you don't say about what you need.
You can tell her you want classic, yeshivish, not trendy and she will absolutely be able to cut a sheitel for you, in a style that you would love, and that suits your face.
She's been doing this for me for years now. Just make sure she finishes it on your head, so she can tell what looks good and what you like.

I'm nervous if I get it from one person and get it cut at someone else, that no one will stand behind it...Is this a silly reason to be nervous?

nowadays she works together with somebody called Shaina Ettel Menda. SE wigs. I would suggest calling Stacey and explaining your concerns and asking her how it would work if you bought a sheitel from Shaina Etta. They do periodically have sales. I think last year the sheitel sale was in december. It might be worth asking when they are planning a sale.

I was actually going to recommend Shaina Ettel Menda (SE Wigs) and I think Stacy Spigelman is working with her now.

Zehava Schlein is great for this! I know someone who was also looking for a similar style to what you are asking for and she did great by Zehava. I used her for a service once and I feel like Zehava was very ehrlich and really stretched herself to make sure I was happy and comfortable with the product.

I recently got a shaitel by miriam bromberg. She really listened to what I wanted and didn't want. I told her I clearly didn't want lace top and gave her a price range. She really worked with me.
I have a relative that wanted to cut it for me (she's in the business), so I didn't have miriam cut it. However she cut a prior shaitel and I was very happy with her work.

Sorry I'm not in Baltimore so can't help but going OT.. I am also not trendy but do you REALLY want to look like a BY teacher from the 90's?? Description is LOL... Brings back memories of my teachers...That side bank poof and fluffy hair not flat on the head. I don't think sheitel machers would even know how to create that look these days!
