Do you think it's appropraite for mainstream yeshivish in tri state area? Don't want it to be too mo and not too israeli... having such a hard time picking a name

Rav Chaim is very against the name Meira. If I remember correctly it has something to do with a klalah....

I think it's totally fine. Like I grew up with a Meira on my block (mainstream yeshivish family), there was a Meira in my seminary (BJJ, and she was from a yeshivish family), my DD has a friend with a sister named Meira....

I would put it on par with names like Zehava, Chaviva, Adina....it's not a Tanach name like Sarah Rivka Rochel and Leah but it's used in yeshivish circles with a positive connotation.

I know there’s a list of names Rav Chaim Kanievski didn’t approve of. Shira is one of those. I don’t know what names are on the list. Not everyone follows it. I know Meira’s who are yeshivish. It’s a pretty name and nice for this time of year.

( I'm missing something. What's the connection to this time of year?)

Why don’t you ask your own rabbi. He might say you need to follow it in which case he probably knows what names are on it. He might say you don’t need to worry about it.

My quite yeshivish niece is named Meira. It didn't stop her from marrying a BMG guy, so.....

If you want to be precise, it means "she gives off light" or "she illuminates." מצוות השם ברה מאירת עינים --Tehillim.

It's season-appropriate because Chanukah is חג האורים, making any name with an association with light, fire or candles season-appropriate.

My young adult daughter has that name. She’s been self conscious about the name in our yeshivish community, so I guess it’s not so typical.

I know a few Meiras in mainstream Lakewood. Not super yeshivish but middle of the road yeshivish schools. Like Bais Faiga and Meoros.

I think meira is a mainstream yeshivishe name at this point, but I will point out that there is definitely more of a mesorah for the name Meir than for meira.

It does strike me as a bit of a modern name on the way Shira and adina are, but I don’t think it would cause anyone problems it’s normal enough
