Hi! We are looking to buy a used car. Anyone know of a reputable site to search vin numbers? The first couple I found seemed good at first but with a bit of searching they felt sketchy (one said you can only cancel subscriptions by phone, the other was a scam site according to google/reddit). I would love if it’s free, but I would pay as long as it’s not too much.

Any other tips on buying used cars, please share!

I only buy from trusted dealers. When we bought direct from a person we took it in to our mechanic that we trust for pre purchase check

We are planning to have a mechanic check it out, but I do want to do some basic background checks before paying for the mechanic! Thanks

Carfax is definitely more expensive than I was hoping, it’s close to $50 to check a vin..

Most dealers can provide a Carfax.
Or ask your mechanic. They have get a bulk rate and can run it for you for cheaper.

You can ask the seller for the carfax.

I’m currently speaking to a private owner, not a dealer

LOL

In common vernacular, it's called the VIN number.
