Is it proper for a store to sell last year’s merchandise at regular price?
I purchased an item, not realizing that it wasn’t a current item, and I paid full price.
So disappointing

I saw a store selling merchandise from 2 years ago for full price! I was really taken aback, I don't think it's ethical.

I shopped at a local maternity store and they sold a dress, that my friend bought a year earlier, for over $300. I guess they figure whoever needed maternity last year won't need it this year so we can sell old styles for full price.

If you’re talking about new clothes and toys or other items of course it is fine it’s up to the store to determine price, if it’s a food item almost close to expiration then it’s not ok

They can sell however they want. Up to you whether to buy for that price. If people aren't interested in buying those styles at that price then they'll eventually mark it down. But if the style is still nice enough that people want it, then why shouldn't they get their profit for selling an in-demand item?

Yes it's disappointing for bargain hunters but that doesn't mean the store is doing something wrong. "Unethical" would be putting the old stock under a sign that says "New arrivals FW24!!!"

They can charge whatever they want. If the item is unused and in good condition, there's no reason why they can't charge full price. The customer has the right to choose whether they consider the item worth the price. Fashion conscious people will probably notice that it is old stock, and won't be interested. Others, who aren't so aware of fashion, or who prefer last years styles, won't care.

As long as the item is in new condition, I don't think ethics really come into it.

Bothers me when some baby stores sell last years layette for full price. Some places have on sale and I feel like I don’t trust a store that does that, my local boutique never does. They don’t put it on sale often but won’t have it full price with this years styles

I don't trust stores that sell last year's style for full price. When it happs to me, I don't shop in that store again.

Hosiery stores sometimes do it and it's fine. If it's a store that sells alot of basics also fine. Basics usually don't go on sale for that reason. If it's Lil legs fir example. Only turtleneck I would consider basics their blazers and everything else is worn in a way that it's stylish not a basic. Maybe demand companies include a label with the year on the inside of the clothing. Tell the manufacturer the situation.
For this reason for weekday clothing I stick to department store basics over fashion. It's timeless.

Some companies make the same item for another season if it's really popular. Sometimes they'll change the color, but something basic like a black pleated skirt will stay the same.
It's unfortunate that the store is doing that. I don't believe it's the right thing to do, but they can run a business how they please. If I was very annoyed, I'd give a call and tell them I dint appreciate what they did.

Some stores/brands do that. Lilegs items are all officially full price unless there’s a flash sale. I’ve seen stores sell their last years merchandise for full price.

The reason it goes on sale typically is because the stores are making room for new merchandise. There’s no ethics involved.

If you genuinely believe clothes should be priced differently based on which season they were introduced, then you must also subscribe to the belief that it’s “less than” to be seen in a previous seasons clothes. Most people don’t think that way- clothes are clothes.

Why does that make a difference if this year's style is indistinguishable from last year's? The giftee's baby will look equally delicious in either sweet little pastel knit number.
