I like a mix, I despise very sad stories personally and try to keep them out of the supplements although I don't always have control over what we take. I do like to have some happy/ fun stories as well. Generally the feedback we get on upbeat stories sounds like this "Was cute!". It's hard to write a fun, very upbeat story that's thought provoking, mature and suitable for adults, I applaud any writer who can pull it off. Short stories need to have a proper coflict just like a novel, however its all smushed into a much smaller space. Sometimes that feels overwhelming as there is less time in a short story to water down with some fun/ light/ happy moments. The conflict is crucial though. That may be why you feel like so many short stories are sad, when really they are just a slice of life, watching a character move through a conflict and come out the other side. I didn't think any of the stories in this past Calligraphy were overly sad, though some were serious.
Editing to add: We often get a lot of positive feedback on our more serious stories, yes even the sad ones. Often the sad ones are the favorite. Setting my personal feelings aside, we know our readership and we try to include something for everyone.

The superbubby story was the perfect blend of fun, very upbeat, mature and suitable for adults. I don't think it was particularly thought provoking, but who needs every story to be thought-provoking? Why can't we just have pure kosher entertainment?
That was my favorite one in this calligraphy. (Just read it last week, second hand

Yes it was fabulous. I also loved it! She is extremely talented and when I asked for something fun and light, she delivered. Its not easy!

Yes, I should have qualified, this Succos wasn't so bad. And re the wallop that short stories pack, yes. They do have to get in a lot without feeling crammed in.

Right. And I do hear you, I often ask myself while reading a sub- is this too sad for YT? I'm definitely very aware of the fact that most of these stories will be read on YT itself, that fact is always at the fore as we're putting together the supplement.

I absolutely love your writing! I still wish you would finish that serial that got aborted after just one(?) Installment .
Regarding this past Calligraphy, I found the Cantonist story to be very sad. But also very well written.

So excited to have you here listening to our feedback!
I'm going to be a party pooper and tell you I didn't like "Case in Point" at all. But that's just me. :-)
I did love Super Bubby.
I have a shelf of most of the calligraphy's from the past 5+ years. Any Calligraphy that had a story that I considered above and beyond goes on that shelf so I can read it later on. Almost every Calligraphy has at least one above and beyond story.
I want more Miriam Zakon! Her Freefall and Fallout were phenomenal.

Thanks!! Yes, it was sad, but the writing was just so gorgoeous, and his strength was inspiring to me. Ora is a brilliant talent.

Re Ora: Yes. Mishpacha has some great short story writers.
I had a pretty good idea about what would happen with the kasha early on but I'd hoped it would be a source of admiration, not patronizing.
And you do wonder what the backstory to that shidduch was, but what can you do, it was a short story.

Ahhh, I loved calligraphy too (first thing I read every single time) but was sooo disappointed that there wasn't a single shidduch story! Sure, it's overdone but it makes the world go round, ya know?
The cantonist one this year was breathtaking!

I really do wish that serials could get published more as real books. Dov Haller's second dance was out of this world and the wry/dry writing style is hysterical. Same with Esther Kurtz, the writing style is also phenomenal. I would love to see more variety in Mishpacha, so many talented authors! |
Esther Kurtz did publish rule of three. I also like her style of writing.

What did everyone think of the hatzalah story? I liked it and I was thinking omg am I a perfectionist like her but then I was discussing it with my 18 year old son and he’s like ok the husband is totally absent and the end of the story tells us it’s all her fault?? And I realized that he really is right! Is it so bad to tell someone to close the muffin container?

I did consider Chany Spira's story a shidduch story...(the diamond one) But yea, I'm a big fan of shidduch stories as well.
