we're MO and somewhat OOT, but moved somewhere else OOT with lots of yeshivish ny/nj transplants. I dont recall anyone talking about mishpacha mag until we moved where we are now. where we are now, everyone obsesses over it. even the guys seem to like to read it. if you're MO or OOT, are you into this mag?

Nope.

Don't allow magazines that eliminate women in our home.

Against our hashkafa (because we follow the Torah).

The Torah doesn’t have pictures either so… but kinda rude to try to imply everyone else who does read it doesn’t follow the Torah.

There aren't pictures of women. There is absolutely no halacha that you can't have a head shot etc of a woman. By eliminating women they are adding to the Torah.

There are lots of threads on this.

In our home we feel very strongly that giving the messages to our children (boys and girls) that women should be invisible/ that women are responsible for men's ability to control themselves, is extremely harmful and antithetical to the hashkafa/halacha we teach.

I wish there was a huge eyeroll emoji.

Women are not invisible they are just modest DIFFERENCE.. you are choosing To feel slighted.. I'm sorry for you.

The magazine very much features women in many different ways and areas.. we do not a picture to be considered equal. What garbage.

And I don't believe for a second that your daughters will be more content or confident in their lives and feminity because u preach this type of equality to them.

I read Ami. It’s interesting to me, although I think the quality of writing varies and they do have a propensity for garish medical stories. Frankly, I read it because it is helpful for my work. My favorite section is Aim and I am continually surprised at the diverse content. I feel that it is better written than the other sections. The lack of female faces is offensive, but I have learned to ignore it and regard it as frankly ridiculous.

I’ll be the first to say it.
Men and women are not equal.
Just like any other two people aren’t exactly the same.
And a kohein is not a levi is not a yisrael. One isn’t better or worse. They’re just different.
And there are pictures of women in treeo. Just like men. Like in the advice column, there’s a picture of Rabbi Ellis and there’s a picture of Mrs. Heyman.
I actually like not having pictures of people in the Mishpacha, it makes it easier to read. More words and less pictures. Much better.

No one said it’s halacha ever. Not having pictures in a magazine doesn’t make women invisible. I’m sorry that you think pictures hold such strong meaning, it sounds kinda superficial to me. I hope to teach my kids about their importance on a much deeper level one that goes beyond pictures and magazines.

Do you have pictures of gedolim in your succah?

Photos of your kids on your walls?

Of course pictures hold meaning.

I don’t have picture of gedolim, I do have of my kids for them in our house. That’s not remotely comparable to needing pictures in a magazine.

I’m in town and not MO but I too am very bothered by the lack of female faces in magazines.

If a face doesn’t help an ad be more effective then why do so many men put their image into their ads? Stop kidding yourselves. A tasteful picture of a woman - even of just her face with no other part of her shown - would go so far in showing respect towards women. If I’m reading about a great woman and all I see are pictures of the men in her life, it nauseates and deeply upsets me. I feel this practice objectifies women and disrespects men. It assumes that men will be vigorously m-sturbating to pictures of Rebetzins because they’re perverts, and it objectifies women.

I do read the mishpacha and they sneak pictures of women in wherever they can, and they have pictures of the female writers on the website. The owner of Mishpacha did an interview a few years ago where he said that he wishes he could print pictures of women. There’s a vocal minority of their audience that would stop buying their magazine if they printed too many images of women. Those people are losers and I think it’s sad that our magazines cater to them, but I do read mishpacha anyways being that they show that they wish they could show pictures of women.

This. They're not eliminated. They're on the editorial board making major decisions, and write many many articles across the main magazine and the one geared for women. They are featured, interviewed, and promoted in every way except pictures. Do I necessarily agree? No but that doesn't mean they're eliminated.

(And to the poster who spoke about the Torah....many of the shevatim and other main characters were born with twin sisters. They're never named because it's not a history book and for the purposes it's not necessary. The 600,000 that left Egypt were the men, the women aren't numbered. The Torah seems to have "eliminated" them? Ch"v. Discretion isn't elimination.)

You forgot, it is for my sons too.

I don't want them learning to objectify women. That somehow their pictures are both inherently zxual and taboo.

I want both my sons and daughters to see women as full people created b'tzelem Elokim, not as something treif.

And yes, I find the hashkafa of eliminating and sxualizing women disturbing and I think it is a distortion of the Torah.

You don't have to agree. There are plenty of other reasons not to have those magazines in one's house, not least the level of gashmiyus in the articles and ads.
(We also hold that it not in line with Torah values).
