Last year, when she was in 7th, we applied to two camps. It would have been her first time going, no older sisters. She did not get in, due to lack of space, and didn't go to sleepaway camp. I did ask a major single girl staff member in one of the camps (think head counselor ) to put in a good word, and also the principal, but it didn't help. DD is a wonderful girl in every way. It wasn't personal. There was no chisaron, just that they didn't have space because they take repeating customers first as well as younger sisters.

DD is beside herself with worry about getting in this year.

What would your hishtadlus strategy be?

The range of camps we'd be open to are Bais Yaakov, Tehilla, Bnos Ruach Chaim, Menucha...

She applied to two of those last year. One was much nicer and more menshlich to deal with as I called after she didn't get in, while the other was more brusque and hard to reach, which makes me not want to reapply.

So should I apply to the one that was more menshlich and the other two?
Or the one that was more menshlich and one more?

Should I have every tom, d!ck, and harry (or more like rivky, chani, and suri) who know the directors or are related to heads or whatever, start calling for pull as soon as I send in application?

Send in the application on the very first day and send to all places so hopefully you’ll get into one. And yes try to call people that know people in the camps. Anybody from school? Your family, neighbor, shul, etc
If there are only few slots you want somebody to suggest your daughters name
Good luck

I know someone who didn’t get into a camp one year and she kept trying but they had no space and then the next year they took her like they gave her kedima bec they knew she had already tried last year and due to lack of space couldn’t take. she did the same pushing and calling the following year and made sure they knew she had tried so hard the previous year etc and they did take her. and it’s a camp tht is very very very hard to get into. so hopefully if there is an open spot they will give u first dibs. make sure to speak to all the right ppl. I would even call before application is in and tell them ur applying again and anything special u should write on the application and how much u rly want to go etc etc.

Is she open to going second half. Many times girls that don’t get into bais Yaakov first half go second.

I like the idea to email The 2 camps she didn’t get into explain what happened last year to please keep it in mind.

It also does help to have ppl call.

At my daughters camp, the girls the want to get in for the first time for a specific half then the DAY that the application arrives, they quickly fill it out and then drop it off by hand at the camp office. It arrives before all the people that mail back the application. I know because I learned the hard way.

I don’t disagree. but I heard the camp fills up quickly so I didn’t take chances. but now it’s also kind of nice not to have to think about it anymore

Wow, drop off at the camp office, now that is really being first in line. Very smart tip IMHO.

Why do you think it's crazy? People book hotels and flights a year in advance. Why should camp be different?
