I'm talking about specifically people you don't know very well.

By us it's my grandparents address so only people who would know the answer to "x Street " get to let themselves in.

We had a guest who asked for the combination but I didn't want to give it to him...
It got a bit awkward but I wasn't comfortable to share it

I get not feeling comfortable but if these guests get home really late from a Simcha or something do you get up to open for them?

We don’t have a combo lock, but I wouldn’t give out a key to someone we don’t know. I do stay up to let people in and to help them with anything they need before bed. I heard an unfortunate story from a relative who has boundary issues and often does not plan well. The host refused to give out a key, but the relative came back so late that no one was awake to open up. I understand that there was a chilly night on the backyard lounge chair.

If I am comfortable hosting someone, I am comfortable giving them a key or code.
I wouldn't host someone I wasn't comfortable giving them access.
If they turn up and you are not happy to give them the code, then be prepared to stay up late.
One option is to have a codelocked keybox for this purpose only and give them access to that. (if your door opens with key as well as code)
You can also change your house code after they leave.

How do you expect them to get in when you're sleeping/not around?
In my house, we just say the door is open, when you come back lock it.
But b"h it's a safe night neighborhood so we leave it open for them.

We don't have combination locks. If a guest is staying by us, we leave a lockbox outside by the door and drive them a combo to that. Inside is the house key. The box is only out when we are in bed for the night. Otherwise, the doors are usually unlocked. Also, we have cameras everywhere and guests know this before they come so if it's a problem, they can make alternate plans.

Of course I give it and whenever we’ve been hosted the hosts give us the combination to get in.

Of course a guest is given the combination code. That’s a given. How do they get in and out?
What do you think will happen? That 24 year old yungerman will come back with his cronies and rob you in middle of the night? We’re all yidden

My guests know my code, and so the rest of the world. My siblings and dh's and their kids. Everyone except my parents actually. My neighbors as well. How else would they get it at 1am to use my fridge, borrow my Bosch or some eggs.
Or to let my cleaner in when I'm running late, or to check if I remembered to turn my oven off before I went to work!

Please don't be naive. Many Jewish people have duped & scammed others including our own

I'm so surprised to see the responses here. If I feel comfortable enough hosting in my home, I would feel comfortable giving out the combination. You can change it after if you have a reason to be concerned

Depends if it’s someone I trust. Otherwise I give a key to one door that has two locks in it and only use the one I give him for those few days.

If you have guests staying in your home, you should be giving them your combination. They should be able to come & go at their own discretion.
That said, I don't host strangers. I only host people that I know well & trust.

I host strangers and family. (For example the neighbors sister )I doesn't make sense not to host strangers because I don't want to give out the combination. I just tell them that the back door is open and it's their responsibility to lock it when them come home.
