My son just turned 9. He is thin, not showing any signs of puberty. But he smells like he needs deoderant. Isn't this premature?

If he needs, he needs. Don't let a number stop you.

Some children have body odor from toddlerhood. It can be a sign of physical maturity, but sometimes the odor-causing bacteria thrive on little kids for no particular reason. There is children's deodorant marketed for younger kids.

Thank you all for responding! I had no idea this is normal.
Last year he only had the body odor when he was sick with high fever and then would sweat when the fever broke.
Last night he took a bath after a 3 day yom tov. when I asked him this morning if he washed himself well he said yes. he said he poured body wash into the bath and then played. so he didn't actually wash himself lol!

My son also started to need deodorant at 9. I also thought it was young. And he's short (and I've done bone x-rays because of the height- he's not ahead of his age).

Toms of Maine wicked cool is an aluminum free deodorant with a neutral scent (not girly, not manly).

They start when they smell no matter what age that is. Depends on the kid. My oldest son started at 11. My 10 yr old has no smell. My niece who is 8 started already and also already wears a bra.

I gave it to my 11.5 yo over the 3 day yom tov. She doesn't need it regularly. But I figured over a 3 day yom tov I don't want to find out that she really did needed it. Lol.

She's def maturing. In underwear and has body hair. She's almost as tall as me too.
No period yet. And no body odor.

It really really really depends on the kid, on their diet and environment.

My kid/family eats a very clean diet at home, and then she has school food and treats. But she takes breakfast from home too. So it's spelt and wholesome whole grains Veggies/fruits wholesome proteins mostly.

I used to STINK as a teen. But then I had autoimmune skin issues. I changed my diet to mostly to what I feed my family now. And I can go months without needing to wear deodorant. I started going daily or 2x a day and regularly and that changed my body odor completely.

My son is 7 and he needs but not all the time, just when he gets hot. I got him wild which is a natural deodorant and it works really well.
