my daughter is going into 5th grade and is very dyslexic we have been working with a reading specialist and the school for years, and she's just so behind. Theres a school in NJ (modern Orthodox) for children with language-based learning disorders we are moving her to that school for September she actually asked to switch because its so hard for her not to be on level. I'm really hoping that being fully submerged in an all day program geared for kids like this is the answer so far the parents that have sent are very happy . The first tutor we used did ordin Gillingham and now we are using the Wilsons program. We did repeat a year in preschool . I've tried so many different methods to be able to stay in a main stream school. But Ultimately I wasn't doing her any favors this way. Schools like this are starting to pop up as more and more people understand the needs of a dyslexic child.

What school did you move her to? Shalshelet? how is it going pls

PM me for details. I know a top-notch reading specialist who is about a half an hour away from Lakewood. I know she does tutoring in person and over zoom.

OP, I'm posting anon because I don't want to be inundated but briefly will share some thoughts. Many people here are definitely throwing out some good programs- Wilson, Davis, etc.. however, a good expert with dyslexia will be trained in many methods so they can custom design a program that treats your child's specific case. Dyslexia has many root causes and people have to be trained to recognize the causes on a case-by-case basis, and custom design a program that works. Most programs will have an Orton Gillingham foundation, but again, they may or may not be effective if not implemented specifically the way your child needs to learn it and apply it properly. A good expert will also be able to collaborate effectively with the other pieces that may need to be targeted depending (again) on what the root cause of the dyslexia is.
Davis is something targets a specific issue- may or may not help, but there are others. Many others. You need someone who knows, not the people who are sharing one-name programs here.
Years ago it was only Wilson. It still is amazing, has some chesronos. You can supplement it with other things to target automaticity or RAN if it's weak. PAF can supplement it nicely. Sometimes orthographic mapping with Wilson can help. My point is, you need someone who has multiple trainings in various research-based programs.
Just sharing- I don't want youjumping into a program, try to find the person instead. Anyone trained in just one research-based program may not be enough for you.
Dr. Zacharowitz in Far Rockaway may be willing to guide you on the phone. You can look her up.

Hatzlacha.

Kiwi is 100% correct!!! An excellent diagnostician will be able to pinpoint where the reading difficulties are and pull from various reading methods in order to support the deficit areas. Methods are only as good as the person who is delivering them

But where to find the diagnostician near LKWD or Edison, NJ? My son is just using PAF at spec ed school and in 5 years made such poor progress- best has been with a reading specialist tutor he has once a week but that is hard after a very long day...

I didn’t read through everything, and you sound like you tried everything, but did you have her evaluated by SUNY College of Optometry?
They found things we hadn’t found with anyone else.
Good luck!

PAF as a stand alone is inadequate. I agree with your frustration. It's an amazing program for weaker language students but it needs more in a toolbox with most students. But any student will only make progress at a minimum of 3x a week plus home practice.
