My son has severe OT struggles with his hands, but is dying to play piano. I don’t want to set him up for failure by having him start. Did anyone here have success with piano or an instrument if they weren’t great with their hands ?

Piano can be great, because he may be motivated to do the work to strengthen his fingers if he likes the music he can make. Definitely worth further research.

You'd do best setting him up with a good teacher who will work with him in person, rather than trying to get him to learn by app or screen. Ask any possible teachers how they build technique, and what experience they have with kids who might need to develop extra strength.

I don't think you're setting him up for failure. Playing an instrument can be a very rewarding experience even for someone who struggles with it, and piano is an excellent instrument for learning about music.

Agree with above imas. Also, keep in mind that a piano requires more hand strength than a basic keyboard. I recommend the Yamaha PSR-283 for beginners. (No- I don't get commissions from Yamaha recs- you're welcome Yamaha!)
