Chicken
PSA. If you see a pregnant (or even not pregnant) woman with an box over her head don’t stare. It’s pretty rude.
What difference does it make if there’s 3 chickens in the box or 5 or 9? Or even 1.
Like it’s so so rude.

Chickens theoretically. Practically kaparos is an hour plus drive away and we don't have a big enough vehicle for the whole family, so DH and the older kids will do chickens and the rest of us will have to do money.

Most yekkes don't do kaparos at all.
Growing up, we used a fish. My mother bought a carp, and put it in the bathtub. We lived out of town, so no chickens available. I guess noone does that anymore.

Is fish just not done? Why is always given as one of the three minhagim if it seems that practically no one does it?

Growing up- money.
Now, I am married to a yekke and we don't do it.
I voted money... because we do give tzeddakah but we don't do it as kapparos per say.

I think I learned once that it's hard because it has to stay alive while you're doing it the whole time
Someone said above that a family used fish when there were no chickens, so maybe no families have that minhag lechatchila, or maybe it's just not practical?

It's got to stay alive and then given to a poor family as tzedoka so they have food for the seuda hamafseket.
It's not practical logically to get all that done.

We do money as we can't guarantee where the chicken will end up after we have done kaporos, atleast with money we can choose the correct organisation to give it on our behalf.
