Do you give maaser from gov money?

If you receive money from the gov for social welfare programs do you give maaser on it?

If the money is for a designated purpose, ie $500 that you can only use for food, then no.

If it's not money, but a benefit (ie, health insurance), then no.

If it's money that can be used for anything, ie refundable tax credit, yes.

Not sure how welfare works so can't answer for that.

Chances are if you're on welfare, you're exempt from maasar.

Regarding tax credit, wouldn't that be if you didn't take masser from it when you originally took from your earnings

I asked a rov. He said if you can't afford to take masser and need it to live then designate the amount, record it somewhere but still use it. Maybe if you win the lottery one day you can return it.
I actually take the maaser money off, keep it in a separate account and use it when I'm desperate.

I was told you don’t have to take maaser on money you pay taxes on.
Like to pay maaser take your salary. subtract taxes. Then only pay taxes on the remainder.

I paid maaser on unemployment. I wasn’t feeling particularly poor though, just unemployed.
