DD told me that apparently her teacher is asking girls.
I told the principal and she didn't think it was so concerning, which is why I'm asking here.

Wow, that's really horrible. It just puts them on the spot and they feel like they have to divulge personal info. Really shocking, and the principal didn't think that's weird?

Is your daughter bold? Can she tell her something along the lines my mother told me this is private info and not to discuss with anyone?
Major red flags it’s absolutely none of the teacher’s business even if she has students that run to the bathroom every five minutes.

Speak to the other principal, the Dean, whoever. Totally not normal or ok to do this

That’s yikes. Seems like the culture of the school. It’s really unfair to the girls to infringe on their boundaries and privacy. I’d push harder and say it’s not ok. We need to teach kids to know how to keep themselves safe, and a teacher infringing on boundaries makes them more susceptible to having others break boundaries.

talk to whoever you can. call the teacher directly and be tough.
maybe you'll scare her off.
maybe if other parents call in too the principal will see how wrong this is.
it's inappropriate on so many levels.

You need to be firm. Tell her it's not normal.

Besides for the terrible inappropriateness very often 6th graders do not know about a period yet.. some 6th graders are still 10 at this time of the year

This is secondhand?
It's not normal to ask, but could it be possible there's more context to this, or the story shifted?

All 10 year olds should know about a period! It's considered early if it happens before age 10, but that's not rare enough to risk kids getting it without knowing what it is.

I worked as a nurse in camp, and sometimes, if a girl was having stomach pain/cramps, I would ask if they were currently on their period. I did that because I wanted to know how to treat it - I'd treat period cramps differently than constipation, for example.
But stam to ask all the girls - completely inappropriate.
There may be more to the story. But if there isn't, I'd call the principal again.

I believe 6th grade is bas mitzvah year. Girls are 11 turning 12.
I just spoke to my 5th grader about this. I would not want any teacher asking her. We discussed it's something personal and private.

If a girl is completely undeveloped, it's not really a risk...

By 6th grade they should know about their periods. So they are not shocked or even traumatized by getting a period and not knowing why blood is leaving their vag1na.

I agree. I tell my girls when they first start to develop. For one dd, that was 11.

Absolutely not.
Breech of privacy and that’s creepy.
