Ds11 has a sudden hunger for devices. Any kind. He’s constantly grabbing any gadget he comes across. Couple weeks ago the kids were watching toveedo on an old laptop and he started searching. That was the end of a laptop for him. But he’s literally grabbing anything including dhs car keys and flip phones we have In the house.
He also seems to be testing boundaries and acting defiant in a way he hasn’t before.
Is this normal for this age?

Sounds like time for a teenage parenting course.
Look into any reason why defiance started suddenly...
You need conversation and education not just confiscating devices

I’m a conversation and education kind of mom. I hardly ever give consequences and until now I hardly ever felt the need to. I have an older daughter deep into puberty and while she has her outbursts there’s been zero defiance on her end.
I don’t know if this is a gender difference, or personality difference, maybe both?
Ofcourse I’ll confiscate a device that isn’t his. He has plenty of his own devices.

Definitely gender but can be personality to.
There's something going on to cause tgis defiance though. It doesn't sound like only issue is his surfing the internet on devices that don't belong to him. Who is he taking keys. Flip phones I can understand.
Some kids do gravitate towards anything electronic.
I still think you should rule out any issue causing sudden defiance.
And regarding the devices you say you are a mom of words and conversation. Technology needs lots of education. The inquisitive boys these days are running after internet and trying their hand , getting into problematic circumstances is very easy. Needs lots of love and conversation, education

From what I can see the defiance comes out when he isn’t getting his way. In the past he accepted a no more easily and there were less no’s all around because his demands were smaller. It’s not a constant thing but when it happens it kind of shocks me because I’m not used to it.
Small example: we were heading out to an appt and I told him to take recess for when he goes to cheder afterwards. He said he wants to go to the grocery before cheder and buy snacks. I said no. He threatened to go anyway. Then he threatened to not get into the car to go to the appt. This never happened before.
