Wow surprised how many people wear wool. Cotton- heimish for reference. DH doesn't wear at night, but many chassidish do. Supposed to be a shmira not to have wet dreams.

This question comes up the whole time.
DH wears cotton with thin strings over a undershirt.
Doesn't wear for bed. -didn't know it was a thing until Imamother.

We've had this many times on ima.
Dh is yeshivish, but really not so yeshivish anymore in certain senses. always wears a white shirt but Watches youtube, has a smart phone.
He holds that wool is the preferred way he only wears wool.
He also holds that you're supposed to have clothes between the tzitzis and the skin, so my boys always wear undershirts and never wore t-shirt tzitzis.
Ds over bar mitzvah wears wool on shabbos, sometimes cotton during week. Phasing out of cotton.
Ds under bar mitzvah wears cotton.

What’s the difference between the cotton and undershirt type?

Whatever is kosher, and doesn't hurt, should be the answer. I was forced into wool tights for school as a child and I scratched to blood so I understand.

I think most guys wearing wool have an undershirt underneath so it doesn't touch their skin

AFAIK one isn't allowed to wear tzitzis straight on skin; that's the controversy with the undershirt tzitzis. It's undershirt, tzitzis, shirt. Or undershirt, shirt, tzitzis aka bib.

They do. Tzitzis can’t touch your skin.
Even it’s it’s cotton or mesh.

Cotton is like the wool ones just made with cotton, most upsherin boys wear those I think even in the chassidish world.
Undershirt type are made from the fabric of an undershirt with the slight stretch and sown half way down the sides.

A (now two) quick google says indeed you don't have to wear something under. But I bet it's like so many things, different teshuvos.

Can you post the links because everything I see says its better to wear an undershirt and it seem controversial to do otherwise.

I'd rather not. Last time I gave a name the rav got harassed by a poster. No one should change anyway, but a question can be asked.
