Just be aware that unless you are planning on self-publishing, you may want to hold off on getting the book illustrated. Many/most publishers want a hand in editing and in the illustrations.
If you want to choose a specific illustrator, you can certainly send in your manuscript with a sample illustration, but it may not increase your chances of acceptance.
If you are self-publishing, ignore the above.

I have illustrated several books. Each time, the author contacted me privately, and I was paid by the author . But yes, I was approved by the publisher.

I’m going to second what someone else said. I wrote a book too. the publisher likes to use specific illustrators. I knew this in advance from someone else so I submitted manuscript without illustrations and was accepted like that. most of them prefer it like that. check with the publisher before you submit if you should have illustrations drawn or submit as is .
