The pudding (starch) helps firm it up.

Also extra vanilla and sugar.

I see no eggs so this is a no bake recipe, right?

Add 1/4 c starch or 1/3 c flour.

Maybe a bit more sugar and vanilla.

is that all is needed for because the sour cream makes it runny so needs firming uo
and can use flour instead or is it also needed for taste?

I wouldn't leave it out, the pudding powder seems integral to this recipe.

Instant pudding thickens it up. Won't work without it.
You can find a different recipe if you don't want vanilla pudding.

And it's also the flavor.
I wonder about cornstarch instead of flour.

You could add 3 eggs.

But then you would have to bake it.

Sure you can use one part cornstarch or potato starch plus vanilla plus two parts sugar instead of pudding.
You can then flavor it with cocoa powder, or cinnamon or whatever your heart desires.
I do it all the time.
