I was looking up a nice skirt for fall that happened to be leather, and asked someone's opinion. She gave me an iffy side glance and said not everyone wears leather...huh? Is that an age group thing or a 'type of look thing'..I'm pretty young so I thought maybe she was saying it wasn't so age appropriate..can someone explain?

I was brought up that leather = motorcycle look. Lingering childhood association but still wouldn't wear today

I’ll start off by saying that I do wear leather skirts. (Nice ones)

But the reason she said that is because certain materials and patterns are not as refined. For example- Jean, leather, leopard pattern, etc. They can be considered a little sl*tty. I personally think it depends on each actual item of clothing, and not the material itself

Thank you for explaining! The skirt I was looking at wasn't a black leathery look, it was a soft color and a refined looking skirt.. think I'll go for it Smile

I just don't think of leather as a clothing material. Leather jackets are different (despite having some connotations) because they're outerwear, but a leather shirt would be weird to me too.

I personally don't wear leather clothing as I think it gives an unrefined look. Reminds me of gangsters or slutts.

Not comfortable
Not flattering on some figures
Not the classiest look- leather has been associated with bikers etc

I know a Christian woman who dresses nicely and is into fashion. She told me she wouldn't wear leather or leapord print clothes because it's too trashy looking for her.

Would only work in winter, which is rainy season here -- not exactly the fabric I'd want to wear in the rain.

Would probably have to be dry cleaned ($$).

I don’t associate it with anything but maybe a good idea to not wear if most frum people feel otherwise(?)
I personally like the trend and view it stylish, as long as everything is tznius why not?
I don’t own really any or have given away because I find polyurethane unbreatable and sweaty for a material.
I think a leather moto jacket is actually cute and on women it doesn’t resemble any of the connotations listed above. But that’s just me

Tzniyus isn't just about covering.
Materials such as jeans, leather is like the non jews-not a refined look.
I have an outfit with leather trim, but will think twice before wearing it depending the place...

I don't wear leather but then I also don't wear jean skirts either. A personal thing I took on when I became more frum, as I felt it was more of a 'streetwear' look and I try to dress more refined now. I WILL wear tops that have a chambray or leather 'accent' like a pocket or patch etc.

Giving away my jean skirts was a hard decision but I did it and am not going back after that, even tho I know it's in style now.

at the same time, plenty of women do and it's a cute look!

I wear leather skirts. I have this one from Banana Republic Factory in both black and burgundy and I love it!

*well, this is vegan leather Very Happy

I’ve seen some leather skirts that are just plain ugly and people have connotations in their mind about leather skirts (usually that they are super short, worn only by a certain type of women, etc).
