Out of town, I shop very budget conscious. I mostly shop at Aldi’s or Walmart, very rarely go to the frum grocery store except for milk, I don’t buy very much meat or chicken and mostly I buy a case twice a year at the subsidized yom tov sale.

I'm surprised that you're spending this if you don't eat out.
We're also 2 adults in Monsey and we spend about $600 on groceries and $100-200 on eating out.
We do go away for Shabbos pretty often. Do you think that's what makes the difference?

This thread is making me feel a little better.
We are 8 people, mostly adult eaters, though not all of them eat all meals at home. I also have company for Shabbos and I buy regular, nice Shabbis food though I don't think I go overboard (chicken Friday night for example but we do serve salmon).
I also buy a lot of convenience foods because we both work between 37 and 50 hours a week.
My grocery bill is between 3k and 4k a month, but if you add up that it's for 8 adults, plus I'm including everything including paper towels and deoderant, maybe we're not doing so badly after all.
I wonder how much lower it would be if I shop in Aldi's and make everything from scratch.

Probably. Shabbos is half my food budget.

Up until now I've been shopping exclusively at local Jewish stores, but now I'm moving next to Aldi so hopefully I'll be spending less.
Shabbos doesn't cost me too much as I make everything myself (challah, dips, etc) and we only put a tiny peice of meat in the cholent for flavor, so I don't think that's the difference.
Our biggest expense is produce, as we eat a lot of fruits and veg. We also do eat chicken or ground beef almost every day for dinner.
But if you have any hacks, please let me know lol.

If I’d have to be on a tighter budget, I know I’d manage with much much less.
But I don’t necessarily buy tons of food. Mainly it’s the healthier choices that make the difference.
Nuts vs chips
Organic eggs and some produce
Avocado and coconut oil
Etc.
And I don’t drive, and don’t live walking distance to any ALDIs or Traders Joe, so everything is from our local supermarket.

I find that the frum stores are expensive for produce in the Monsey area.
I do produce shopping every other week in wegmans.
The quality is much better and prices are a lot cheaper.( it lasts 2 weeks)
I do check my own greens and herbs .
But shopping non Jewish for produce reduced our food budget by at least 200 a month.
( I cook very produce heavy, love salads and fresh fruit)

How can you afford that? Your income must be high. I definitely recommend trying out Aldi or Walmart - you can save so much. If you’re buying deodorant and paper towels at a Jewish store (not sure if you are based on your post), you’re spending much more than you need to.
If you’re wealthy and have money to spare, buying everything at Jewish stores is a nice thing to do. I’d shop there fully if I was rich.

Aldi and Costco are are Instacart. Both have good quality cheap(er) produce than the local Jewish stores. And you’ll save a bundle buying nuts and oils from Costco too. You don’t need a membership via Instacart

2 adults, $500 on just food, Not paper towel or paper goods. I order those in bulk, maybe it’s another 15-20 a month for those?
