What was your recipe? How many eggs? Yellow makes me think it was too many eggs

I do 6 lbs of flour and 3 eggs for reference and it’s a beautiful white.

I'm afraid of saying because people are gonna call me stupid lol. But it was around 8 cups flour 2 eggs. I only make enough to make three challos.

2 eggs to 8 cups is my mothers recipe (and her mothers before her, I admit to using one ) and never did it come out yellow. Were your yolks extra dark (apricot orange colored)? Did someone put in food dye behind your back?

Was it yellow when you shaped it? Or just turned yellow after baking?

What shade of yellow?

Did you use a different brand flour? What about the oil? was the yeast fresh?

2 eggs to eight cups flour is not a lot of eggs… my recipe calls for way more eggs and doesn’t come out yellow. Maybe not perfect white, but still a very acceptable color for bread

I used high gluten flour orange and white bag
Dough was pale yellow once mixed.
Then when it was out of the oven and sliced it was a darker yellow almost brown but not burnt.
Oven was only on 350.
It looked like toasted bread

usually this has nothing to do with the recipe and more to do with the flour used and length of time baked. I found that Costco's flour (gold medal) made yellow challah, whereas Hecker's does not. Also, if you overbake the challah, the inside may turn yellow. Good luck!

Makes sense, thanks!

The recipe I used was originally meant for a big batch but I guess I got the measurements wrong. It's meant to be a sweet challah recipe.
Here goes.

6 cups hot water
4oz fresh yeast
3 cups sugar
6 lbs flour
1 cup oil
4 tbs salt
4 eggs

I don't have a mixer, so I wanted to make a smaller batch (enough for 3 loaves)

Should I do one egg next time and make the oven temperature lower?

Thats an awful lot of sugar for challah. This is more like cake. Could be the sugar is making it yellow.

Sugar is the culprit.

Yea I requested it after being at her house many many years ago for shabbos
I knew it was going to be sweet (I love sweet)

I had a slip of paper that had the smaller version of this recipe and when I would make it after my chasuna it would be nice and white and so so delicious.
