is it truly useful?

we'll have a milchig oven so won't need a toaster... microwave built-in somewhere.

so what's it for? food processor? it's used so un-often...

blender? I guess that's a fun thing to have easy access to, but I got very used to just keeping it in a cabinet.

what else goes there? does it just collect dirt/clutter (since it's harder to see in and clean than the plain countertop)?

I don't have an appliance garage, but I wish I did. I would keep my food processor, stand mixer, and crockpot in it. Those are all things I use on a semi regular basis but have no space to store in my kitchen cabinets. Either they live on my countertop or they have to be schlepped up and downstairs every time I need them, which is annoying on many levels.

we bought a house that came with one but was too short for my kitchen aid, so be aware of the appropriate height if you are putting one in a new kitchen. We ended up using it for cereal boxes cuz it didnt work for appliances...

to another "steel":

that does sound very annoying!!

I don't have a stand mixer (and no plans to get one--I'm very happy with a hand mixer).

crock pot... I don't even remember where we keep it. I guess that's how un-often we use it! lately we've been making cholent in a pot, when we make it at all.

is it useful for smaller appliances? (like a hand mixer, immersion blender...)

If you don’t see yourself enjoying it then it’s definitely a waste.

I had a kind of "garage" built when I remodeled.

I keep my food processor and Kitchenaid Mixer in there.

Mine has a front door and a side door and the counter runs into it. I can slide the food processor or mixer right onto the counter when I use it instead of having to shlep it from where it was stored.

I don't like storing these items on the counter because they get shmootzy and look cluttered. If they are on the counter I have to move them to even just wipe down the counters.

Op, if you have the space for it it's the best thing! I don't have one but I have a lift in cabinet and my appliances are always plugged in. For me an appliance garage was #1 in a kitchen. I didn't have the space. I have 2 cabinet lifts. One for food processor and one for my mixer. You never have to shlep appliance here and there. It's always parked. Make sure you have an outlet right there and you'll thank everybody who told you to do it.

I have one that’s a coffee station (urn, coffee paraphernalia, etc) and one that I keep my crock pot and ninja in.

I absolutely adore mine (my kitchen looks so neat and uncluttered with the doors down and I don’t have to shlep things in and out of cabinets) but if those are not important to you don’t get it!!!

Wish I had one. Would use my appliances way more often if they were right there. I have to endanger life and limb climbing on stepstools to reach appliances on high shelves, which is why I use them so seldom. And my stand mixer has no "home" because it's both too tall and too heavy to put on a cabinet shelf.

But you do you, OP. If you don't use appliances in any case, don't bother. Though in your shoes I would use the space for storage of other things.

I don't mind the look of it. It's a great whatchamacallit in the kitchen if you have the space. I didn't have room for a garage so I did 2 lifts.

I have one area that I could have put one in but it was in a corner where I wouldn't use those appliances. It only makes sense if that's where those appliances are actually used. I bake on my island for example. An appliance garage with my Bosch or kitchen aid on my fleishig counter didn't make sense.
The other thing to note is that it visually closes the space. I don't have a huge kitchen and I prefer the clear spaces and to take out my appliances than to block the space and take away counter space.

What you're saying about baking on the island is true, so my lift drawers are in the island. But my food processor for example I wouldn't care if it's in a corner. So I'll make my potato kugel or tomato dip in that area.
