We only drink soda on shabbos and I promised my kids that I’ll buy them orange soda this week. Putting aside the fact that soda isn’t healthy, which is the better option for kids- diet or regular?

They claim the regular is the better option. They are both unhealthy.

Regular. Sugar can cause diabetes, weight gain and a host of other issues but at least it’s not proven to cause cancer like diet sodas

Regular soda in moderation. Fake sugar is terrible for anyone.

Diet soda is fine, artificial sweeteners in the US don’t cause cancer. Soda of any kind isn’t a health food but won’t kill you. Sugar causes cavities for sure so I prefer serving diet soda for that reason.

My husband claims diet. He only allows the kids to drink diet soda, not regular. .
If you ask doctors, you will get divided opinions.

While we tend to but non-diet and non-caffeinated for our kids, in reality It's not the end of the world to have diet--because if it spills then it's not sticky. It's a special treat for Shabbos. Even if you want to say "artificial sweetners are not healthy"--there is NO way they are consuming enough for that to be a real problem.
I grew up on Diet Pepsi with no health issues.

I always thought that for kids under puberty you give regular because the sweeteners in diet inhibits growth. And adults only were allowed to have diet. Is there any truth to that?

we only buy diet for shbbs soda because when diet soda spills, its not sticky (on the floor, after wiping) and regular is.

Regular.
Personally I mix some Seltzer together with soda, like that it's half the sugar. But I do that more because soda is sickly sweet and makes me nauseous but I occasionally like to have regular soda mixed with Seltzer. Like someone else said, type of soda matters. We stick to sprite and ginger ale, no coloring or caffeine.

Artificial sweeteners have NOT been proven to cause cancer in humans.
I prefer diet soda for my kids, but not on a regular basis.
