It always is used in a negative sense- like jokes about tasteless Ashky food or Ashky’s starving on Pesach. I’m not going to stop anyone from saying it, but I definitely don’t appreciate it. |
It’s a derogatory term for refer to ashkanazim. Not sure where it comes from

Lol it actually comes from something positive!
Dub is short for the letter W - J e W - meaning Jewish, which was the way the Ashkenazim were often referred to be Sephardim in America years ago, because of the language they spoke - Yiddish = Jewish

It’s the letters JW sorted to JDub
Named was becouse Ashkenazim in the 50s spoke Yiddish
Or in English Jewish
They also called the Italians the IT
Over the years it has become a derogatory term.

How is this positive? And how does it equal ashkenaz? Still offensive. We just said Sephardim no nicknames or derogatory terms based on languages necessary.

I went to Syrian school , my husband didn’t
Live in Lakewood
We attend sefardic Shul
My older kids went to Ashkenaz school and younger are now in the Syrian schools
World of a difference for the boys
For girls not so much
I feel so bad for my older boys
The Havaraah just doesn’t come naturally for them, even though they learned to read for bar Mitzvah in Sefardic
Being that my husband isn’t soo super Syrian they don’t feel that connection so much and it’s so sad for me
Big regret for me now that I didn’t send my older boys to Sefardic school even though at the time wasn’t a great option
