How often do people find they need to replace tzitzis for teenage boys??
Is it normal that I bought 6 pairs of undershirt tzitzis (which I wash in a mesh bag/with “magen tzitzis” string wrapper things) just before Pesach and I already have to buy more?? That’s over $100 in tzitzis in 4 months???
They are unraveling at the ends as well as tearing at the top by the holes (truly making them pasul). Am I just really bad at doing laundry??!
ETA: my husband wears woolen tzitzis with cotton undershirts and his tzitzis last forever cuz he washes them less frequently. But I have to wash DS’s after 1-2 wears. He’s very sensory not interested in multiple layers.

I learned from this site that you can put clear nail polish on the ends and the knots to helpf them last longer.

The tzitzis comes with a pocket on the inside of the beged near each hole. You’re supposed to tuck the strings into the pocket when you wash them. I’m going to guess that the thing you’re attaching to the strings when you wash is pulling on the beged in the wash and ripping it.

The top is probably tearing because the strings aren't fully wrapped in the magen tzitsis.
I learnt the heard way. Make sure that the top, "knotted" section, also goes in the magen. Not only the loose strings.

Thanks, I’ll try this.

I’ve seen the “pockets”, but do they actually keep the strings securely inside?
Sometimes I try to hang them to dry, but they dry wrinkly and DS prefers how they feel “smooth” out of the dryer. The magen tzitzis are dryer safe (but loud, lol), but I wonder if the strings would stay in the pockets in the dryer too.

I never dry tzitzis in the drier. I don't know if that helps. My kids also put either clear nail polish or super glue at the very ends of the strings.

I started hand washing them in a sink. The washing machine destroys them.

We hang to dry. I wonder if it’s ripping when being banged around the dryer.

They definitely stay in the pocket in the washing machine. I doubt they would stay in the dryer though. I wash on delicates in mesh bags. Then straighten the strings when I hang them to dry while wet. I really don’t think tzitzis strings are meant to go in the dryer.
