I took my teen to the Judaica store last week to choose something inspirational for herself and the family. She chose a kid comic book about the churban, and Angels in Orange. I wholeheartedly supported her choices (and am reading both books myself. The comic book is actually very well done, has the history and the conflict of what was going on very well illustrated. And the Oct 7 book is definitely a must-read.)
I also stacked various books from previous year purchases on the coffee table, so they are available for reading. We have "A Time to Weep", "Touched by their Tears", and other similar books, plus various Holocaust books. She was definitely looking at some of them last night.
She went with me to Aicha last night, and is currently sleeping in. When she gets up I'll probably be listening to the Kinnus dial-in (they do shiurim on the various kinnus in Lakewood, and I dial in) till chatzos. She'll daven Shacharis. Sometimes she then comes and sits next to me, more for the company than for the shiur but that's fine.
After Chatzos we'll do some videos. And she'll help me bake for after-the fast. We might deliver some goodies for after the fast to her married sisters.
Basically it's where she's holding, and I try to slip in some info about the day wherever I can. |
Can you share the name of the comic book? Such a great idea for my teen, I think that’s exactly what she needs and would love to pick it up for her today.

We watch the obligatory „Service in beis hamikdash“ animation (with younger kids) and I comment and direct their attention. It makes it into more of a bonding experience. |
Can you link this

In the past sometimes I've set my (older) kids up at dining table with diamond art or painting or clay and put a video/shiur/story on while they are crafting which we all watch together .
They can tune in and out as they wish and feels less heavy this way. |
Such a great idea, thanks!

No, it's an attitude that she has in general

Would love a link to the recommended books. A comic would probably go over well enough.

I mean it’s the age.
I have the same age girl and I leave her alone and am happy she is fasting and not chewing my head off complaining how bad she is feeling, so I would let her eat, as if I am the rav…

Hearts on Fire
There are others.
I thought it portrayed the different factions well, on a basic level. And people doing Chessed even in difficult times.

She is 13. Cut her some slack. Having expectations of her and her sensing your disappointment will only lead to resentment (and I say this from experience of what my mom did to me). My 13 year old DD is still in bed. It's 1:30 but it's ok. When she gets up I will invite her to watch some relevant stuff with me. Talk to her a little about the day. And then bake with her. I know as she matures the day will take on more meaning.

Thank you. I hadn’t seen this one. This author has other good ones about Yerushalayim and similar with more detail than others. I’ll have to get this too

I’m way too old to relate to your teen … but I do. Model for her. I listened to Devoiry Kreiman on listening lchaim
Rivky Plaut-Morel on meaningful people
That gave me meaning. They are both real. Not irritatingly saccharine. Model it for her. Then talk. Just talk and connect. Today and every day
