Is it safe to be home in our basement apartment in Brooklyn in the storm? My mother just called to say she heard on the news it’s not safe but I didn’t see or hear anything.. doesn’t seem so bad now

There are no severe warnings out there.
Unless you live in a high risk flood zone, I don’t think it’s dangerous. But you might get some rain coming in.

I'm not sure about Brooklyn specifically but many areas of NY, NJ, PA were under flash flood warnings. If you have somewhere higher up to go, I would at least have a plan on standby in case things get serious.
Our basement flooded in a flash storm some months ago and it was actually scary. Bh the rain stopped and the water went down before our makeshift dam burst but it was about 4 feet outside the door and that kind of pressure could have come inside at any minute.
We are NOT in a high risk flood zone but the ground was saturated from the heavy rain so the usual drainage didn't happen.
