Following…. Same issue. My dd is in mainstream school in Monsey and changing schools is not an option….any recommendations?

There is some emerging evidence that linguistic based reading programs, also known as “speech to print” may get quicker results with students who struggle than OG style programs. Look into Reading Simplified and EBLI. Reading simplified is supposed to be easy to follow and you may even be able to teach your child yourself. Also, consider joining a Facebook group for parents of dyslexics and science of reading.

My sibling couldn't read Hebrew in 3rd or 4th grade (I don't remember which). They were dyslexic. They worked with Draizy Zelcer and made incredible progress.

I've since taken one of my kids to her. She does a very thorough evaluation that tests much more than just reading skills. It's memory, processing, auditory processing and much more.

She lives in Lakewood and would probably be a good resource for you.

Please DM me. I can send you some phone numbers of reading specialists trained in Orton Gillingham, Wilson, and LIPs. Those are the top-3 when it comes to research based reading/writing instruction. I just don't know if the women I recommend are comfortable with their phone numbers being posted online.

And just know, your daughter CAN learn to read. She just needs someone to find the way her brain learns best.

Liba barouk in Florida has a program. Perhaps offers zoom?
She has a summer reading boot camp program.
I've seen that someone traveled to go to her. I don't know how common it is.

These are only for English. But you can easily adapt the methods for kriyah once you learn them. Very worth looking into in my opinion. Until now Wilson and OG were considered gold standard, but recent research hasn’t shown they are any better than another explicit and systematic program.

Hugs and good luck to you! I know how hard this challenge is. We went through the same with my DD who is currently 16. Did the vision specialist, the school provided tutors, evaluations by specialists, etc. Eventually what worked was hiring a trained orton gillingham /wilson tutor to come to our house once a week to work with her 1:1. We paid a fortune for years of tutoring. But it was all worth it- I remember when she was in 8th grade texting the tutor that she had read a complete age appropriate chapter book- it was such a moment of success and nachas! Bh now she reads and keeps up with her peers. Hoping the right shaliach comes your way.

My son could barely read at that age. We did Linda mood bell program after spending already tens of thousands in vision therapy and other “specialists”, and bh it took a year but it worked. It required daily sessions 4 times a week and was a very expensive undertaking. He stayed in regular school obviously they had to be on board with him leaving early every day and I had to make it my afternoon job, but he just graduated high school and actually loves reading and is at grade level.

I am not clear that your child was diagnosed with dyslexia. I recommend here in NY, don't know about Lakewood a developmental optomotrist at Suny College in Manhattan or ODA vision center in Williamsburg, suny college is the best, you can get it on insurance, I know someone who went from second gr to high school reading in one year and another who read easier in 2 weeks and now loves and is able to read novels at 10 liking it better than comics for first time. I assume you saw an ot for a really good work up. I like to start with the eyes, opthamologists don't do this as I understand it. Be carefull you go to a quality place, I know a child with prism, progressives on vision therapy and it helps a lot academically!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chashi Brand is amazing, but she is located in Brooklyn. She taught my daughter who has dyslexia. My daughter's case was relatively mild, but I know other kids with much more severe cases who she was able to help. I don't think she works over zoom though.
