I’m having quite a sticker shock. Coming from overseas where tuition was heavily aided.

What is the asking cost? What do you actually pay?

How much of a break can I ask for? I don’t want to ask for too much but it’s really really high… Not in chinuch…

Should a 1/3 of my salary go to schooling? Is that normal?

Ask a rav in your location to guide you what to ask for based on your income and expenses. We did so for our oldest and the school still didn't agree with us or the Rav on the break we needed so then ended up going back to him and he helped us figure out where in the budget we can make reasonable cuts. We are paying in tuition amount the same amount per month in rent after breaks and cutting back on the few things that were keeping me together (cleaning help, nothing more than basic groceries, can't give maaser, etc.) I'm stressed out but BH the Rav helped us through all the steps and helped us figure out how to make it work when we didnt get the break we needed.

The school gives a huge amount for full tuition which no one pays. Let's say $15-20,000 and people pay between 5-8000.

Depends on age. About 14k from K-5. About 18k from 6-8. And then 22-25k for high school. I do work at one of the elementary schools, which give 1 kid for free. Don't get me wrong, it helps, but I still have to pay for the others. I don't know what we'll do when we have to start dealing with high school. I guess we'll ask for a break and see what happens.

Child 1 high school: 20k
Child 2 middle school: 15k
Child 3 elementary school: 10k
Child 4 preschool: 9k
Child 5 daycare: 9k

Total: 63k

We pay about 40 to 45 k each year which is about 25% of our gross income. Its staggeringly hard because so much taxes are taken out also.

My son’s high school tuition is over 25k. We get a huge break. I’m not sure my daughter’s exactly (maybe around 10k? But I could be totally off, it might be less). We also get a break for hers. BH all the schools we’ve dealt with have been generous with breaks. I’m so shocked when I read here about people having a hard time getting breaks. We’re not poor BH, we just can’t afford more like many average frum families.

How much do schools give a break?

Say tuition is 14k, how much would they give to a single mom?

Thanks.

If my school was this price I’d pay in full plus extra donation.

Preschool around 12k
Elementary 15k

Then there’s lots of extras throughout the year another $2000 - 4000

It’s a fortune and we think of Aliyah every time we talk about tuition fees ahhh !!! 🙈

I wrote above that my son’s tuition is 25k+
I think we pay around 15k. So that is a very big break. But clearly it depends which school and what community.

Lakewood full tuition.

Mesivta boys $12000 + $2000 building fee to be paid over 4 years + $250 transportation fee + $150 registration fee
They are fairly flexible giving a break down to 8k, more than that is case by case basis. The extra fees are nonnegotiable.

Girls high schools $7000 + $1800 building fee to be paid over 4 years + $125 registration+ $100 book fee + $200 GO fee.
They will negotiate down to $5500 easily. Extra fees nonnegotiable.

Boys elementary school. $9000 per boy + $5000 building fee per family to be paid over 9 years or as long as you have kids in the school + $200 transportation + 150 registration+ $200 dinner or fundraiser event +cheder camp (each year runs between $250-$350 per kid depending on logistics and calendar).
Theyve negotiated down to 6k per kid easily, more than that depends on circumstances

Girls elementary school. $6200 per girl +$6000 building fee to be paid over 9 years or as long as you have kids in the school + $150 registration+ $100 project/GO fee.
They've given us $5500 easily.

I worked another job with the money going straight to tuition , in addition to the large portion of my DH salary to cover tuition. Between the two of us we paid 100 percent full tuition . We feel it is a priority and gives an important message to our kids.I can’t say if it’s related or not but BH we are blessed our kids are very ehrlich. FTR the “full “ tuition we and others pay is significantly more than it costs to educate our children - because those paying full tuition are paying to cover the shortfall for those getting breaks. If you truly need a break , go for it.however If you can cut back somewhere else, esp on non necessary things , pls keep this in mind .
