Thank you, that’s fair. However, I am working in a different type of role than the others (albeit mine is more skilled), and I only know I’m paid unfairly because I run payroll. Will this come across as unprofessional?

That’s what people tell me. That they will never let me go. But I’m still worried.

I tried applying to the six figure jobs for a while and didn’t get a single interview.

I was a recruiter for a bit and I learned something very valuable.

People get paid how much they think they are worth.

Of course this has a limit, when a person is right out of school and wants 75K for their first job or want 250K with only 5 years experience they get an eyeroll…

But in general, being in a superior position requires confidence. And lacking that confidence will affect the pay.

I would sometimes interview someone and based on their capabilities start thinking “k this is an 100K candidate”. Then I asked them how much they wanted and they started hemming and hawing about how they are embarrassed but the economy and ummm maybe ummm like I dunno they really would love 60k but look if they can only get 50k that’s ok too…

And boom. In my mind they are no longer an 100k candidate. And rightfully so—because that lack of confidence means they are no longer leader material—despite other skills.

So I would say before you ask for a raise you need to develop the confidence and leadership skills to believe you deserve more. Not because of what your coworkers make, or because of the economy. But because you believe in your own value.

A more skilled roll role should be paid more, not less.
You know you're paid unfairly because of your years of experience and qualifications, not only because you run payroll. But you can throw the payroll thing in there also. Your boss is probably in shock that you know everyone makes more than you and haven't asked for a raise yet.

Thank you for writing this out. I'm in the job market right now and I appreciate knowing this. Most recruiters I spoke to, I felt were so far off with numbers.

That's a perfectly acceptable reason to ask to be paid more. Think it over, phrase it professionally. You absolutely should ask based on this.

(Don't say, everyone else is getting paid more! That sounds whiny. But give across that point in a professional way.)
