Now naming businesses Celuette or Certo. Now that's another story. I'm still trying to figure out why a clothing store would name their shop something so close to cellulite. Even when you Google, that's all that comes up. And Certo? I really want to know who this supermarket's marketing genius was. |
In terms of Celuette I've heard it's a frenchified spelling of "silhouette"

Well they're saying it wrong then! Chic is pronounced shik in french and that's where it comes from
Israelis would say keedeesheek because that's how they talk

I'm pretty sure that even in French it's pronounced sheek.

No it'd definitely sheek in French. Although their ee is slightly shorter than the American ee. A good way to compare is to use the British pronunciation, where shik and sheek sound very different.

Regarding the supposed âdâ sound in words like âkittenâ, it actually isnât a âdâ sound. Americans do use what you all are calling a soft d, in words like âwaterâ - we donât say wahter, we say wadder. But words like âkittenâ donât have a âdâ sound (we donât say kidden).
Words like kitten actually have a glottal stop, where the glottis (the open part of the larynx aka the voicebox in your throat) fully closes, then opens. So what youâre hearing in kitten/mitten is actually a full stopping of airflow briefly, followed by a vocalic ânâ sound (meaning an ânâ preceded by a brief vowel sound). Ki + glottal stop + vocalic n.

They were trying to pretend they knew how to spell it in French. Celuette isnât French. Itâs awful. When I see the sign my brain yells CELLULITE.
Kidichic is a cute name. The Iâs are pronounced ee but a shorter ee than Americans use. Chic is a French word thatâs become an international word. Ch in French is sh like a shin. Think of drinking champagne in Lake Champlain with your friend Charlotte.

I just called. It's Kiddy-sheek
And actually when I called Tottini, the recording seems to pronounce it as Tot-teeny. I'm surprised because I never even considered any pronunciation other than Toe -teeny.
