I have a master’s in linguistics and it’s usually pronounced “uh” in everyday American speech. In more formal settings, speakers will use both - “ay” for things they want to emphasize, “uh” for less emphasis.

I think the options are a Kamatz sound vs a Tzeirei sound, there's no vowel for Shva

The schwa is the phonetic symbol for the unstressed “uh” sound.

Not shva.

In English any time any vowel says “uh” it’s considered a schwa sound. Schwa sound can be spelled many ways. The a in petal is schwa for example.

Actually, not to be nerdy but actually there are two options for the uh sound. Schwa is for unstressed syllables and the wedge (upside down v) is for stressed syllables. Both represent “uh” but there are subtle acoustic differences.

The "upside down v" (ʌ) is used when it is stressed, as in the word "up." I think the word "a" is generally pronounced as a schwa because it is usually unstressed, and when it is stressed it is the vowel /e/.

I was going to say before a vowel but WHOOPS that would be AN.

I guess I was thinking of "the", which, IIRC, is pronounced thuh, but before a vowel will be thee

As in thuh car. Thee apple.

Reading experts, do you agree? (too lazy to google...)
