My 11th grade mesivta son is telling me that almost all the kids in his class are driving. I am totally not interested in having him drive, nor is it necessary since we can't afford additional insurance and car.

I am curious if all you 11th grade lakewood moms are letting your sons drive? (or moms with older kids when did you allow).

Also, just browsing through the online information it seems so confusing.
Am I correct in that the steps are as follows.
1. gets a permit
2. takes a knowledge test
3. passes knowledge test then studies for driving test
4. passes driving test then gets license

Not in Lakewood. Where I live you can get a permit at 14 and 9 months.
Um, what?
My 14 year old is already talking about it.
I can not imagine letting a 14 year old start the process towards driving!!
(I’m from NY so totally different experience)

Not lakewood or tristated.

My boys took drivers ed (required in my state) the summer going into 10th. They got their permits at some point during 10th. My state requires 60 practice hours. When they are in yeshiva it takes a long time. They legally have 2 years to do the 60 hours or you have to take the permit test again. I am makpid on the full 60 hours, not only is it the law, but I feel they don't really know how to drive well until they have that many hours under their belt. It took my boys around 18 months to complete their 60 hours. My boys got their license the summer before 12th grade.

They barely drive and yeshiva doesn't allow them to drive to school, but it was a huge help bein hazmanim for them to help me out with driving, errands, etc. (my girls are still little, so it's my boys or my husband or myself)

Personally I made my son follow his school rule.
While or is true many boys didn’t follow the rule more did the. He thought. Like 1/2 his class got their license the day they were allowed.
I think it was important to learn not to follow the crowd and just do things. We have a rosh yeshiva and/or menahel and we need to follow what they say.

Thanks for all the replies. I see most moms wrote that they are not allowing their son to drive yet. Curious when you will start the process?

My son is 17, he's in Yeshiva in Lakewood but we don't live there. He'll probably get his permit Bein Hazmanim and his license maybe a year later as he'll really only have time to practice Sukkos and Pesach. I'm pretty sure his Yeshiva doesn't have a rule against getting license but the boys are not allowed to have cars there.
