My sons bar mitzva falls out midweek and most of my family will iyh come for the following Shabbos. Most will not be able to come 2x. My husband feels it is important to make something the day of his barmitzva. We are thinking of just inviting his class to a Bo Bayom. In our community bo Bayom “must” have music and dancing.
Has anyone done this, and how did it work?
Another question is if we only invite the class and do some sort of buffet style will it be weird if I invite family/friends that cannot come for Shabbos? Do I have to make a fancier event if I am inviting others beside his class.

Where I live, the bo bayom is the class party with some family but its mostly geared towards the boys. We did food that teenage boys like, had a one man band and some speeches. Was 2 hours and very nice. I dont really have a lot of family so I had some friends and neighbors come too but you dont have to.
ETA I am in Chicago which I think has some similarities to passaic.

I live in Passaic and made a bar mitzvah and here really anything goes. There was a real variety in what the boys did from no bo bayom at all to a
vort type dessert reception with music to full fledged sit down. What you’re planning sounds fine to me and yes you can invite your friends in addition to the boys just make it clear that it’s not a sit down event.

Plenty of bar mitzvah in Passaic are only buffet and not sit down. What you are planning sounds perfect
