Looking for a service for a smartphone to work in the USA and Canada - need a bit of data just for Waze and Google Maps.
I usually have US mobile for $6 a month and wondering if there is another cheap plan that would cover Canada.

We have TING. Service worked in Canada (there were moments when it was spotty) However, they charged roaming so the cost for the day or 2 we were in Canada was high. (We used waze, phone and text) My son is in yeshiva in Canada and we put him on the plan. He's only allowed a "dumb" phone for when he travels home, so the one or 2 phone calls or texts he send don't cost too much.

a Verizon plan is $34.99 is it more or less?

The plan itself isn't expensive, but the roaming was. I think I paid $19 for 2 days in Canada for phone, text, and waze.
