Cefdinir for shigella? Urgent

My dr prescribed cefdinir for shigella for dc. I trust my dr wholeheartedly.
(Or so I think so)I'm just a Googler. Google says that cefdinir is not effective for shigella. Please tell me I'm crazy.

In my experience, shigella passes on its own. Good luck, it’s miserable. Disinfect everything often.

Kid is miserable! I was almost in the er last night. I'm so scared to go into shabbos. Diarrhea isn't so often bh but kid is feeling misery with 103 fever. Why couldn't he give me azithromycin??

How long does it take? I'm upto day 3 1/2

We had 103 and terrible body aches for 2 days, then just terrible pain & diarrhea for another 2 days.
Took about 5-6 days to fully disappear.

Unless it's a newborn, 103 isn't dangerous.

I would give antibiotics if you have other kids.. I didn't give my 3 year old antibiotics and he was home for 9 days with it and I was losing my mind washing hands and disinfecting. the fever and vomiting subsided after 1.5 days but the diarrhea took 9 days and it was horrible!

So many ways to manage fever and keep kid comfortable until it passes that doesn't involve antibiotics.

I think it was a week. You’ll need to reculture to be sure it’s gone.

We just went through this. Was brutal. Didn’t Medicate because it was over shabbos/yt and was improving. They’re still going to the bathroom a lot more than usual a week later.

I had it Rosh hashana time and I thought I was gonna die. Took zpak and was a new person overnight. I would definitely give antibiotics, why suffer?? Why don’t you call your doctor and ask about the cefdinir vs azythromycin?

It is bacterial, yes. The danger is dehydration, iirc. I was told not to give any anti diarrheal drugs to allow the body to expel the infection. I don’t know that antibiotics would be great in the long run, it would knock out the good bacteria too. Assume everyone in your house will catch it. Disinfect as much as you can as often as you can. Antibiotics will not make the child less contagious.

You need antibiotics to get rid of it. Otherwise it lingers for weeks and months. Do not make your kid suffer for longer.

First line treatments are azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and ceftriaxone. Unless they did a stool culture with sensitivity that showed resistance or susceptibility that is different than the norm.

Ceftriaxone is an IV only 3rd generation cephalosporin. Cefdinir is an oral 3rd generation cephalosporin. That would mean they have approximately the same action and efficacy.

My source is epocrates, which is a prescribers resource. I use it for looking up pretty much everything I prescribe if I need a dosage check. It listed all 3 as 1st line. The citations for this are the CDC ID guidelines and IDSA.

Don't remember which abx specifically, but I had shigella as an adult and it was awful. Please don't make your baby suffer unnecessarily, sort out the treatment and then treat.
