I tried for the first time to boil gefilte fish in the oven. I put a loaf in a small covered corningware and added 2 carrots, some pepper and some boiled water. It's been in the oven for 50 minutes at 350. How do I know when it's ready? tia

About 1 hr - 1.5 hours but I'd tell you to slice the carrots to make sure they cook in time.

I have the best baked gefile fish recipe. Its super easy and I get tons of compliments on it.

spay a loaf pan with pam
sprinkle pepper and peprika
put in oven at 350 for 1 hour covered and 1/2 hour uncovered
let cool put in fridge

The cover and uncover thing you dont have to do. It cooks for 1 1/2 uncovered just fine you bassically cant burn it so if you forget about your fish for 2 hours it still tastes great (know this from experience!)

Good luck! Let me know how it comes out!

I leave it out of the freezer just a bit before so that I can easily peel off the paper.

But no water you dont want your fish to be mushy. (nothings worse then mushy fish!!)
You just bake it as is.

I bake mine in the oven all the time. with two variations.

1. on the bottom of pan diced onions, sugar, salt and peper, and few drops of water, put loaf unwrapped on top. cover and bake 350 for 1-1 1/2 hours
2. unwrapped fish, with a half a can of petite diced tomatos cover and bake same as above

I bake mine plain and uncovered till it's brown. no water.

question--

how is this quick if it takes at least fifty minutes in the oven? I keep mine on the stove top for an hour when I boil it. seems to be about the same...

I do the same. Smile
Just stick it in the pan into the oven, and there you have it!

Sometimes I peel off the paper halfway, sprinkle seasoning and cover back up. I find if I remove the paper totally, the fish expands to fit the pan and comes out too loose.

I also jsut bake it with some olive oil and salt and pepper. I remove the paper completely, I like that it expands.

I pput mine in a small loaf pan so when it expands it still keeps the shape. I spray the pan with pam then put the defrosted fish loaf in without the paper and sprinkle garlic and onion powder on top. I cook it on 400 till its brown on top. its delicious.

I usually bake it with tom. sauce, but wanted to do something differnt this week, and can't stand the smell of it boiling.

As for QUICK - I meant - help me , quick! Sorry for the confusion.

I ended up taking it out about an hour later because I wanted to go to sleep. I hope it's cooked!

I know it's too late for this time, but Shanie5 posted a really, really good recipe for baked gefilte fish. It has become a real favorite here.

Saute until soft:
green, red, and or yellow peppers, sliced
medium onion, sliced

Add:
1/2 c. ketchup
salt & pepper, to taste
garlic powder, to taste

Unwrap fish, place in a loaf or rectangular pan, lined with parchment paper. Pour pepper mixture over the fish. Bake uncovered at 350 for 2 hours.
