I need to book flights today because my travel credits in my JetBlue travel bank is expiring. I think I will book tickets to Miami for midwinter vacation (from NYC). I have no way of knowing the exact week of midwinter vacation now, so I will make an educated guess.
Is it worthwhile to splurge for Blue fares (an extra $70 per ticket)? I think the airlines frequently cancel these flights or change the times anyway, which would make me qualify for free changes anyway....- or am I wrong? I don't want to lose the ticket value if I end up needing to cancel, yet don't want to spend what I think is a lot for what should be an inexpensive flight. WWYD?

Every time I booked a basic fare I ended up regretting it. One time I lost the ticket bH because of a simcha but upsetting to see a ticket go to waste with no chance to change it. Other times it was minor inconveniences that were frustrating and we dealt but frustrating. I told myself no more basic tickets - but I guess I’ll say that until the price makes me change my mind. If I had the money, I personally would book a regular fare.

I only book basic if I know I won’t cancel (given no sudden emergency)
Meaning if I’m flying for a simcha, a last minute vacation or even yom tov. I know the dates, I plan accordingly and the only reason I would cancel is for a true emergency.
I wouldn’t book basic for a vacation in a while.

Also good to keep in mind that basic often doesn’t include a carry on bag

Right. Instead of 2 bags, one to go in overhead and one beneath seat, you only get one beneath seat.
Pretty sure you also can’t pick your seats so if you’re flying with family you could end up separated.
I always avoid the bargain basement fares, just too many caveats and I always regret it.

You could email the school and ask for the dates of midwinter.
