In Brooklyn it's common to take your job remote for the summer. They understand the bungalow mentality.
In Europe taking 2 weeks off for holiday Is also the norm

In the colony I grew up in, most mothers worked in some capacity. Some worked in schools so were off in the summer, some worked remote and went in once a week, and some were sahm or had their own business that they managed upstate. As for how ppl afford it, some young ppl I know that go rent out their home for summer to cover it, some ppl had help from parents etc and some were just able to afford it. The price has gone up tremendously the last couple years And I know ppl that stopped going bec of that

Most people in my colony work part time during the year either with a special Ed degree doing p3 or seit in a school or some computer work but not full time jobs. These are all free to vacation in the summer. Some people bring along their work and work some days while their children are out at day camp.
The country is a huge expense and with the little extra cash we have we choose to go because both me and dh feel it's the best for the kids. People who never went can't try to understand. It's not something you can describe.
Dh comes up for extended weekends because he works a job that needs him in the office.

They budget & save for it throughout the year.
When we lived in Brooklyn, it was non negotiable for us. We had a 1 bedroom apartment with afew kids & not going to the country was not an option. It was a must for our mental well being.

I grew up going - my mother was teaching.
some of my best childhood memories are from the bungalows.
I get why it may seem crazy to someone who never experienced it but really its something amazing for a kid
